Towing Series III 88 on dolly

All,

If I tow a series III 88 on a dolly with the rear wheels on the road, should I remove the rear driveshaft?

The manufacturer says to put the main gearbox in fourth and the transfer box in neutral. I'd also make sure the front FWH's were unlocked.

ICBC requires that as well as the dolly being insured and licensed, that the car on it have a special "being towed" insurance. I had my 109 licensed, insured to the tenth degree and still they wouldn't let me tow it on a dolly without putting another fifty bucks worth on it. The insurance already on it was for it as a motor vehicle, on the dolly it wasn't a motor vehicle; or so their rational goes.

Good luck! My advice? Get a car hauling trailer.

I used to tow my rovers around quite abit on a dolly. I removed the rear drive shaft a couple of times and then I installed free-wheeling hubs on the rear axle... both worked well. I agree with Greg regarding a car hauling trailer, I prefer going that option here in BC as it is way less hassle with ICBC and if you are renting from U-Haul the price difference between a trailer and dolly is very little. I don't think U-Haul dollies have brakes but the car hauling trailers do which is a nice thing to have on the hills around here.

I have rented trailers from U-Haul a couple of times and they are hassle-free and not that expensive. Originally I was goiing to use a dolly but they they talked me out of it for reasons I can't now remember. The trailers are very easy to load . Larry
