2011 Northwest Challenge
Hi,
Have we heard from our friends in the Unexplored Southern Areas (USA) about this year's Northwest Challenge?
Has a date been set? Venue chosen? Sponsors lined up?
Rufus and I are interested in assisting this year as Race Marshals.
Please advise so that we can block off the necessary time on our calender.

Northwest Challenge 2011
The 23rd annual Northwest Challenge is fast approaching! This year’s Challenge will be held in Central Washington, West of Naches, from September 30 - October 2. Events will start Friday night, September 30, probably around 8 p.m. Competitors may even have tasks to complete on their way to the event.
To help in planning your participation, www.nwchallenge.com is your source for NWC history, photos of past challenges, and details on Northwest Challenge 2011. You can also use the website to register as a competitor or a volunteer. So far, we have only one registered team, though I know there are more interested parties out there! Register before August 1st and save $10 on your registration fee. A host of details on this year’s event will continue to be added to the site during July and August, so keep an eye out.
We'll be working hard to put on a Challenge worthy of the trip down from Canada, so register now, and we'll see you in 68 days!

Greetings everyone,
Although I have registered as a volunteer, I'm interested in participating in the 2011 Northwest Challenge as a co-driver. With 24 years experience in an armoured reconnaissance regiment driving and commanding all types of 4x4 and 6x6 vehicles, I bring to your team a highly motivated navigator experienced at recovery / extraction (not that my team mate would need the latter due to the former).
I competed in the 2007 NWC as a driver in my 1968 Series 2A 109 (Putt Putt) and volunteered as a race marshal in the 2010 NWC.
Send me a PM if I can be of assistance.

Update from Mike Bach
It's T minus 9 days now to NWC 2011 and counting very fast! Scouting trip number three is in the books, and all is almost ready to go for this year's Challenge. The organizing team is now frantically trying to get it all together so we can have a fun and challenging event for all.
As stated on the website (www.nwchallenge.com), the Challenge will be based at the Kaner Flats campground, located at N47.01139, W121.13028. We have the Group Site reserved. This may make for some interesting parking logistics, but I think we'll be able to get it figured out. Worst case, there's a whole big camping area across from our reserved site that can take overflow. Either way, we'll be just fine!
There are toilets at the campground. Contrary to what the I said in the last email, I found the water pump! So there is running water for cooking/drinking. Fuel and groceries are still available within 5-ish miles of the campground. The area is, however, a little short on available firewood. So that we can have good fires to chat around on Friday, and especially Saturday night, I'll be awarding a set number of additional points to each competitor team that brings five (5) pieces of firewood to the Challenge (not kindling). Any volunteers that can bring firewood, your contribution would also be welcome.
As listed on the "Event" page of the website, a GPS receiver will be required for the event's navigational tasks. In addition, there are a couple of maps that will prove very useful: Yakima County Recreation Guide, provided by the Yakima County Sherriff's Office; and Naches Ranger District. Both are available at the Naches Ranger Station in Naches, WA. They may also be available on-line. I haven't checked. Also, I've seen some handy maps of the area at www.nwjeepn.com . Look at maps for trails in the Manastash Ridge area, and there's a few maps that may prove useful there, too.
I'll send out another email with any final details early next week, and may still have some final final details at the last minute. The first event will be starting Friday night, September 30, at 8 p.m.
Though there's a team or two on the edge right now, we're up to nine teams registered, and I know there are still a couple of potential competitors out there. If any of you have influence over any of those, time to nag! It would really be great to see a solid 10-team field.
Let me know if you have any questions at this point. We're still plugging away at putting this together, and I still can't wait for the event! (Good thing I won't have to wait long!)

We're back.....
Hi everyone,
I believe that everyone is home safe and sound by now. At this year's NWC, the RoverLanders were represetned by the following two teams:
- David Blair, Kris Markson (co-driver) in David's 1999 Land Rover Discovery II
- Don MacDonald, Chris Duff (co-driver) in Don's 1993 Land Rover Defender 110
As race marshalls, Pamela Blair (along with the Rover Pups) and Floris van Weelderen ensured that the challenges went smoothly and were thoroughly documented - keep an eye on the NWC website, your second eye on our upcoming newsletter, and your third eye (doesn't everyone have one?) on our photo gallery.
First place went to Dennis Bell and Paul Petroff (co-driver) in Dennis' 1958 Series I 88” V8 - yes a Series I won the 23rd Northwest Challenge - even after Dennis ripped out the engine mounts in his trusty steed. The Canucks rounded out the top five with Don in 4th and David in 5th out of a field of nine Land Rovers.
No signficant injuries to report as of this time although there were the usual bumps and bruises. Trucks did not fare as well with one Land Rover rolling on the rock climb challenge at Funny Rocks. Note that the Defender 90 (no names, no pack drill) landed on its wheels, was winched free of the crevice where it landed, had its right front wheel replaced, started up and drove away to finish the competition. Say no more, it's a Rover! Other competitors can tell you about the repairs they conducted late at night on the trail or in the base camp in order to reach the finish line.
Any road, lots of stories, not enough time to type, see you on the trail...
PS Remember we host the 25th Anniversary in 2013 - only two years from now!

We're back and recovering. No major bruises here, but really tired today for some reason. A great event, and yes, its time to start thinking about 2013.
We did a track log of Saturday which you might find interesting: http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1313258
cheers, Dave & Pamela

Congrats on the 4th & 5th finishes...sounds like it was quite the challenge!
Looking forward to hearing all the details and seeing the photos..
Dave, the really tired feeling is an "age" thing! Youll get over it in a week or two
