Whipsaw - Canada Day Long Weekend

#1 Post by Doc Tari » Sun Jun 16, 2013 11:31 pm

Heading up to Whipsaw on the Canada Day long weekend, June 29 - July 1. The snow should be clear by now but hopefully still early enough that the bugs will not yet be out in full force, as they are on Whipsaw during most of the summer. Still to determine departure date / time and may not be for the entire weekend.

Post up if anyone is interested.

Pete

I've heard whipsaw is a pretty awesome bunch of trails. You can spend a whole weekend out there easily enough.
I may be interested. I'll have to see how well the truck is running and all that good stuff.

A winch is not essential at all. Bone stock vehicles have done the trail many times. There are challenges along the trail but most have a bypass. In any case, with your fellow Rover-Landers there to provide a tug or winch line if needed, you'll be well covered.

I have to put proper shoes on the mall crawler before I take it along Whipsaw....255/55r18 highway tread just isn't going to do the trick. I'm planning on spending 2 or 3 days (fly rod in hand) in the area in mid-late September this year.

Without snow, a winch is not needed as long as you stay where you're supposed to be.

So we leave Saturday and come back Monday or could one return to Vancouver Late Sunday?

There is no set plan yet, departure and return dates are not yet decided. I can't go Friday night so Saturday is most likely for me. With 3 hours travel to the trail head on Saturday morning (from Langley), we'll get halfway through the trail for the first night's camp. We could get through the rest on Sunday early enough to allow people to drive home Sunday evening or those interested in camping on Sunday night could do so as well.

Dang, I don't think I'll be able to make this. Plans with my lady and whatnot.
Would have been a lot of fun, and surely my old Rangie would gain some new battle scars and new stories.

Oh well. I'm sure I'll make it to whipsaw some day.

Unfortunately, something has come up and I have to change my plans so I will not be able to enjoy Whipsaw over the long weekend. Those interested should still go as it's a great trail and a good time of year for it.

Sorry,
Pete

Sorry to hear that Pete.

Is anyone still interested in going? I would like to attempt it. I haven't done the Whipsaw before.

Hey Pete, sorry to hear you had to pull out.
David, I am planning on going, I know the route well.
If the snow has melted enough and the spring flowers are out it can be a awesome time of the year to run the Whipsaw.
I don't have a chainsaw and it always a good to idea to bring one along in the spring, if anyone has one that's coming along let us know.
Not sure if I'm heading up Friday late afternoon or Saturday morning. We can all meet in Princeton on Saturday morning if that works for everyone?
Cheers,
Andy

I can bring a chainsaw (14", so no big stuff!). I will be heading up Saturday morning.

Anyone interested in convoying Saturday morning?

Hey, the weekend is almost here!

For those adventuring out to the Whipsaw this weekend.....
A couple of us are heading up to camp at Copper Creek, just North of Manning park on Friday night and others are coming up on Saturday morning.
If you are coming up on Saturday morning we will be meeting at the Princeton Chevron gas station between 10.30 and 11am. From there we will head to Coalmont and onto the Whipsaw.
Back onto Highway 3 on Sunday afternoon to get home to Vancouver Sunday evening.

Let us know if your coming and what time so we can look out for you,

Cheers, Andy

I was hoping to go on this trip in the next few weeks. Could someone who went on the trip give an update on whether there was still snow on the ground, and if it is possible to do the trip now with a stock Discovery II?

Thanks,

Hi Sonnys,

There was still pockets of snow but it will most likely all be gone in a week or two.
A stock discovery could easily run the Whipsaw but is likely take some hits to the rear bumper and the under side (diffs and sills). I wouldn't recommend trying it alone as you should always have a second vehicle to help you out. I will be posting our trip photos in the gallery in the next day or two so you will get a good idea of what your up against.

Cheers,
Andy

Craig said it!

A lot of fun, even with a bit of an unwelcome start.

Is the cleanup run mentioned in the newsletter August 24th still happening?

Hi Scot,

Shawn who was running this trip had his land rover in for mechanical repairs so I'm not sure if he was planning to reschedule at a later date. If he doesn't post here maybe send him an email, his email is in the contacts tab from the home page,

Cheers,
Andy
