window motors

#1 Post by TJay » Wed Mar 25, 2020 9:09 am

I'm feeling kinda dumb here, but being that electrical stuff is not my strong point, is there anyone that can tell me how to bench test the window motor? Also maybe someone has some insight as to why the windows and sunroof will not work? It's a "96 D1, I got a used window ecu from Gardner's, Florida but no joy there, also tried the Atlantic British rear window fix and no joy there either. Any ideas would be great. It makes it a real pita at Timmy's drive thru lol.
Thanks and have a great day,
Tom

I would first test the wiring to the window motor, after checking the fuse of course. Then check the switches if you have no power output and the fuses are good. As for the motor, you can do a continuity test to see if the wiring inside the motor is broken.

Is just one window not working? On my D2, the front and rear motors (on the same side) are interchangeable. My drivers window didn't work so I put in the one from the rear. It worked, so then I ordered a new one (not very expensive.).

Thanks landcrabmechanic, I've checked the fuses, so I'll see if I can figure out the switches and wiring. I have the rave manuals but I find they are pretty tough to understand the wiring diagrams.
harv, no the whole window system is not working, all the windows and both sunroofs, nothing at all. I did get a new motor (yup they are fairly inexpensive) because the wires on one had been stripped for a half inch or so half way between the connector and the motor.
Then to add insult to injury my '97 D1 (daily driver) developed the no crank syndrome yesterday, I'm figuring possibly bad ground, the small wire to the solenoid or dead starter. I'll report back later.
Have a great day everyone and stay safe,
Tom

For the switches, a multimeter would be helpful. There are also some relays behind the glovebox that could be the issue. I had an issue on a disco2 with the seat switch melting down due to someone spilling coffee on it, fuse was ok but relay fried.
I am not sure which relay it is under the dash.

I have gone through the rave manual and can't see any relays in the window/sunroof system and I have checked the ground points that I can find (probably missed a couple, LR put grounds in some strange places) I'll go through that again. I could see one or two windows not working because of switches but the whole window/sunroof system doesn't work. I would be real happy if I can get the drivers window to work for now anyway. I tried bench testing a new motor, hooked up - to one pin and + to the other and nothing happened, am I missing something there?
Thanks,
Tom

When I got into this to start with, I had read both of those posts as well as the ones on Dweb, so I pulled the board out of the ecu and yup it was fried. Without much hope I cleaned things up and soldered wire between the burnt out spots, no luck. Then ran across a used ecu from Gardner's, Florida and tried that, no luck. Heck I"d be happy just to get the drivers window to work.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
I am waiting for a program I use to come back online. I should have some more info soon.

Do you have power to the back of the switch?

I just got back, charged the battery to make sure I had good voltage it was holding at 13.7, checked for power at the ecu out and at the back of the switches and no power at either. Maybe I got a bad ecu? I pulled the board out to check for dry joints and soldered up a couple just because they looked a wee bit iffy still nothing. If I could get the motor to work on the bench I would be tempted to just run it on a different switch?

Hi Tom, my program is working again. Have you figured out your window issue yet?

Not yet, I'm trying to track down a known good ecu but with the state of things a lot of shops are not shipping to Canada right now so if you have any info you could share that would be much appreciated.

Have you tried coast import autowrecking on Mitchell Island?
I have found a diagnostic from Landrover that tells you which wires to test for power, and which to test when the switch is engaged.
Send your email and I will get this sent off to you sometime today.

Nope haven't checked coast import will do that today. That diagnostic sounds like it will be very helpful.
