The Rover-Landers of BC

I am in the process of rebuilding my series III and because of how I use it am thinking of making my 88 a 109. My question is this because I use it for a lot of forestry cleanup and fencing as well as hauling water around my place I need to strengthen the axles and make them able to handle 34” tires for the ground clearance. I’ve considered a spring over conversion and helper springs already and new driveshafts from GBR, but the internals are the question I’m trying to overcome while trying to keep as much of it Rover as I can. Any thoughts on those who may have done this already?

You can build up the axles. The only problem is the front as nobody makes front Series heavy duty half shafts anymore. Coiler axles are easier to build but there are a bunch of things you need to do to get them working with the leaf springs.

A spring over is not a simple thing as the steering arms want to go through the springs.

The other problem is axle tramp and you will want a ladder bar in the rear.

It all can be done and 34s are no big problem but you need to know what you are doing and it will cost.

In that case I may as well just swap out to coil springs and use my old Range Rover axles and add power steering off of my 2.25 diesel!

I know that Land Rover purists will kill me....but you could always swap in a set of FJ40 axles. The newer ones have disk brakes as well 👍🏼

I have Rover axles so I’d rather not put toy axles under a Rover, and Range Rover axles have discs too

Both the Range Rover axles and the Cruiser axles will need the internals beefed up.

Yes, and I have a true trac and GBR ring and pinion and am looking at GBR axles

I've been running 33's (255/85/16) on my 88" for years. I don't have a lift, other than what the parabolic springs gave me and they work great. I do break the odd axle, but they're cheap. Maybe for the extra inch of tire you need more lift, but I suspect you don't.

I run narrow 32’s on stock axles, but depending on the season I would like to be able to run a lower ground pressure tire in part of the year and moving out the axle to be able to get 13” wide tires on it would be a huge benefit
