Key stuck in ignition - help!

Hi everyone - I have a 2000 Discovery II and having issues with my ignition key stuck in the ignition. Has been happening for the past eight months and have been tolerating it but now it's down right frustrating! Wiggling the steering wheel and now holding a soft cushy pair of gloves to prevent my hand getting messed up. It's already blistered.
My mechanic told me it could cost up to almost $1000 to get a new ignition drum? or whatever the word is?
Any feedback please to fix it? I live in Victoria and have owned this vehicle for almost three years and has been wonderful to drive and look after.
Looking forward to anyone's replies.

I think if you search landroverforums.com or discoweb you'll find several threads on this issue.

This problem might be related to the XYZ switch on the gear shift linkage being out of adjustment (or possibly failing). That switch sends a signal that the vehicle is in PARK and the key can be removed from the ignition. Another symptom that could indicate the XYZ switch error might be hard starting (won't crank) either in PARK or NEUTRAL. Also, make sure that you're placing the gear selector firmly into PARK and see if that helps the problem as well. Lots of discussion about this on the "Discoweb" forums as well that might help you figure it out.

Hope this helps, cheers, Rob

Thank you. Will mention this to my mechanic - I go to Fernwood Auto - they have looked after my vehicles rather well.
Have definitely moved it into Park so going to ask about the XYZ switch.
