Hi all,
I've got a super nice 109 frame that I'm going to use for a project coming up.But it has one problem. For some strange reason a previous owner has removed the large crossmember running under bellhousing!I have not seen anyone offering this crossmember in the aftermarket,I assume because they rarely rot out.So question is if anyone out there has a 109 frame that is beyond repair & if this crossmember is still sound,would you be willing to cut it out of the frame for me?I would be happy to purchase whole frame & do it myself but I live on the north coast of BC
& really don't want to do a long distance trip for this.If this dosen't pan out,I'll just have to build my own.Anyhow if anyone can help,much appreciated

Hi Mike,
I don't have one BUT I believe the MOD frame has a bolt on cross memeber that fits a 109. I don't know what shipping would cost, but it might be available online.

I think your talking about the gearbox crossmember that yes is a bolt in unit on military chassis.I'm talking about the crossmember that curves under the bellhousing.I'll bet someone removed it
to make removal of the gearbox easier!I know I can build this crossmember but it would then be a matter of someone making a paper pattern of the front or back of crossmember as a reference
& couple of pics with a few measurements to locate it properly.That's why a used crossmember would make life easier.

Yup,that's the one.Like I say,it's so odd that someone had removed it.Would anyone know if it's exactly the same as an 88?I do know the 109 frame is deeper in construction at this point but how that impacts depth of crossmember I don't know? Like I say,I don't have any reference points.

Save this 2nd pic and enlarge it. Then, knowing that the width between frame rails is 31", you should be able to scale off the other measurements.

I have a 109 and an 88 chassis in the yard at the moment.
The 88 is junk and for parts so I will see if the crossmember is any good. Would be willing to cut it out and ship it to you if it’s any good.
I am in Powell river so there is shipping to consider.

Just ordered a brand new nos crossmember from Dingocroft in the UK. It was approx. $55.Cdn + $95.Cdn shipping.You can't beat that price.
For the amount of time it would take to build,You can't beat that price.It's amazing what's out there still for these old rovers.

It maybe too late but if you ask the shipper to list HS code 9966.00.00 on your paper work it could save you some money on custom duties.
Car parts for vehicles over 25 years old should be duty free with this code listed.

PS- if they are using a courier to deliver you may also get hit with a brokerage charge for getting it through customs

Andy, if it’s UK-made, there are no import duties any more due to the recent Trade Agreement. Just PST and GST, plus about $18 handling charge.

From my recent experience, if it’s sent from the UK, the carriers (DHL and Fedex in my case) assume it was made there anyway…

Also any part for a vehicle over 25 years old is duty exempt anyway. Somewhere I have the Canadian Customs declaration statement to attach to the package. Unfortunately the couriers often still gouge you for it.

Just got my DHL bill & there was no duty,just the tax & the DHL fee .It was $7 tax & $18 DHl fee.A bit steep for a bit of paper but it appears to be a flat fee because I paid the same $18
on a much larger order from another supplier in the UK

To legally qualify, the part can’t be suitable for a newer vehicle. Which can disqualify a lot of Defender parts if you’ve got a jobsworth dealing with it…

You will pay the handling fee to DHL/Fedex/Canada Post for collecting PST/GST anyway.
