D1 The great oil debate

Looking at doing regular oil changes service on the D1 but I keep seeing others recommending Rotella oil, which is for Diesel engines. Other forums recommend it because it’s ideal for pushrod engines. Anyone have any thoughts on this, as well as viscosity?
Thanks

Hi Andreas,

Any 10W40 would be great for the D1.
I personally am using Klondike oil. I have also used liqui moly, eneos, idemitsu, motul, total, Fuchs,

As long as you use a quality oil, it does not really matter which oil you use.

I really like the rotella T6 5w40, the T4, T5. It is a very high quality oil. If you have some oil leaks, it is very expensive to be dripping out.

I just use Canadian tire castrol oil 10w40 whenever its on sale... 5000km oil change and endless leaks adds up quite a bit for fancy oils.

I also add a bottle of zinc additive after every oil change, seems to keep oil pressure light at bay.

Hi Scott, thoughts on zinc additive?

People use the diesel oil because it has higher levels of ZDDP. This help protect the flat tappets. Modern engine oils designed for gasoline engine have low levels. All modern engines use roller lifters.

Here's a good video on the topic... FAQ: What oil should I put in my Rover V8 Engine? Will this FAQ break the internet?

I use Royal Purple HPS (synthetic) 10/40 in my D2 it has the required zinc and engine seems to like fine. I have used Rotella 10/40 as well but prefer the Royal Purple.

Any decent quality 10/30 will do. As for additive, Lucas heavy duty oil treatment would be not bad.

I know this whole oil thing has been beat to death, but I don’t think I’ve read much about viscosities in cold climates. I’ve been using high zinc 5W-40’s like Rotella or Delvac due to our sometimes cold winters. Almost every winter, here in Kelowna, it dips below -20C and this year below -30. I’d like to use the 20W-50 that RPI recommends but I’m leery about it in winter. I never put on the 5,000 miles in a year so I’ve only been changing oil once a year. I know some of your also live and drive your V8 Rovers in cold weather. What are your thoughts?

0W-40 if you need to do cold starts at those temperatures.

Thanks for that Red. Last summer we also broke +45C. Maybe in our climate I should consider changing oil twice a year just to keep the viscosity right?

No. That is good for all temperatures.
