Series engine upgrades

I saw a post from an overseas restorer claiming to be able to squeeze 120bhp out of a series 2.25 petrol.
He said the main proponents of this resto were an upgraded cylinder heads, cam shaft, air filter, manifold, and SU carb while changing the compression to 9:1.
Anyone have any experience doing something like this? It seemed like a relatively simple upgrade for people wanting a bit more power and torque.
How much would something like this cost? The sound coming from this guys 4cyl…. Was very appealing

prices listed and I believe bhp close to 120

Looks like around $4k for the parts. I’d imagine the cylinder head upgrade and cam shaft would make the biggest difference.

Yes, add the Power Plus carb system and Power Plus 4:1 tubular exhaust (non cast OEM).
Caution on the head upgrade.....according to Roland Marlowe at ACR....there are metric/non metric issues on rockers re series 2, 2a etc.

That’s a huge power boost. That would be a very welcome upgrade if true.

I have had an ACR head on my rig for 15+ years. Works great. I really think the camshaft would help out as well.
How much did it help? Huge difference to the clapped out motor before rebuild. Also bored it out to 30 over.
Still looks at inclines with disdain though.

Huh. The guy said that top speed wouldn’t really be effected, but rather power and torque through the mid range would be substantially better. Was hoping I would t have to get out and push up hills anymore…

You need a gear change to go faster. How fast can you go?

Generally I can get up to and maintain 50-55 mph. 60 downhill with the wind at my back

Mine could hold 65 mph on the flat (completely stock 2.25 petrol), but it was working hard. The vehicle itself felt a lot more comfortable at 55 though. A bit more power for our BC mountain highways would have been nice, but otherwise adequate for the vehicle. For off road the power and torque of the engine was never an issue.
