I found this article which I thought was very good. Definitely worth a read for anyone who finds themselves around a winch.

Your right John, this is an excellent article on gear for winching and a good reminder about taking short cuts on strength requirements. Too bad he doesn't emphasize vehicle anchor points more or discuss spreading the load on the vehicle chassis. Just as a matter of interest I was taught many years ago about the proper way to clamp wire rope as is portrayed in this article but I was given a tip to easily remember the proper way. Cable clamps have three parts, the "U", the saddle, and the nuts. The article clearly explains the "dead vs. live" end of the wire rope. So the tip I was given was "Never Saddle a Dead Horse".
I know most have probably heard this expression before but I thought it might be helpful for some.
