Hey Derek,

Moving day was today!
Victor has been helping me for the last few days to assemble a bit of Land Rover and today to load and unload everything from one shop to another. (I wonder if I will be able to find anything now that I've moved.) I packed up the entire disassembled 109 and trailered it to a neighbours' shop. It is a little closer than the 2 or 3 miles away that it was. Hopefully I will go work on it in the evenings now.
After I got the transmission in, I decided to go with the newer T case. It seemed to be fine and went in fairly easily. I changed a bunch, but not all of the 3/8 studs to UNF from BSF. It is simple, you just remove one, then screw the other in its' place. In our little town there isn't ready access to a range of sizes for the studs so a few are a bit longer than I wanted and I didn't change any of the really short ones. I didn't change the ones between the Trans and T case as I didn't decide to do it till they were all bolted up. What is the advantage? Regular 9/16 nuts that are easy to get a socket onto. I changed the bolts for the front of the rear prop shaft too, and for the E brake drum. The prop shaft is now easy to do up with a normal 9/16 socket (Well, not really. I use a wobble socket, but it should be.) Got the E brake all assembled and lever installed so there would be some brakes when we loaded her onto the trailer and again when it was to come off. I needed to do this because there are no other brakes because the bulkhead is still off. There is no steering either. The steering wheel and box are off with the bulkhead. You move the 109 a bit, stop, push a front wheel a bit till its turned the right way, move the 109 a bit more, stop, shove the tire sideways again till they are pointed the right way again, then do it all again. Not too hard really, just hard to describe.
Next task is to clean the new shop and build a bench.

As first and second don't have a syncro, they may (will) grind or have difficulty going into gear when you are stopped, as the main and layshaft will continue to turn a bit even though the clutch is disengaged and the gears are in neutral (there is still some friction present). For this reason, it is always advisable (when stopped) to engage third or fourth (because they have syncro so easily engage when there is some shaft rotation) to momentarily stop the shafts from turning, then quickly engage first or second to pull away. Difficult to get out of third? We're talking about a "pre" series three I expect! Check the oil level is right in the Trans. Is it EP 80-90? It should be. (You can no longer buy straight EP 90.) Check the shift mechanism itself to be sure the shift ball and pivot are not binding, also, that there isn't a stone or other foreign object in the shift gates (have to remove the tunnel to see shift gates). You say you have to "lift" the shift a bit to get it out of third. Do you mean you physically lift the shift lever (towards the roof) or do you mean you push it a bit farther forward? If you lift it towards the roof, I would suspect the shifter itself. There are several bits and pieces in there. Maybe it is dry, worn or broken and preventing a smooth slide back to N or 4. The shifter disappears into a pivot ball at the shifter tower. on the right side of this there is a slot. You can see this from a seated position in the drivers seat. No need to disassemble anything. the slot should be right at the three o'clock position. If it isn't, I know what is wrong but won't tell you!
Just kidding! The slot is for a pin that prevents the shifter from rotating. If I recall correctly (aka IIRC) it is an Allen head screw, but might be a regular slotted screw in the three o'clock position on the shift tower. IIRC you can just access this without removing the tunnel, just push the rubber shift boot out of the way and part way down on the aluminium "tower" is a hole with a recessed screw. this needs to be turned in far enough that the shifter pivot will hinge around it. If there is wear or a broken bit in here, it may be preventing a smooth extraction from third. The other possibility that Rob mentioned is the shifter detent ball, spring and lubrication. Again, easily fixed but you have to remove the tunnel cover to get at the retainers.
Give another shout for help if none of this helps.

Hi Sean

Does the shift level move through the gears easily when the truck is
not running? If so that should eliminate lever, fork, detente
problems. I would look at the clutch master and slave cylinder (fluid
topped-up, bleed the system, do you see travel on the slave when the
clutch is depressed). Also check the adjustment of the slave and rod
connection to ensure the travel is adequate. If the master, slave and
travel adjustments are good then it might be the clutch plate and
workings (might be oil contaminated, worn-out, or rusted). You could
try spraying brake cleaner into the clutch housing from the top
inspection plate which might remedy the oil contamination briefly but
the long term solution is going to be seperating the clutch and gear
box to check-out the condition of the unit. The reason I am focussing
on the clutch is because it is a cheaper and simpler fix than the
tranny so you want to eliminate it first before tearing open the
tranny... if it gets to that stage I recommend chatting with Greg as
he has become our resident tranny box expert.

Hi Robin

Sorry I didn't get back to you... caught a Friday night ferry. Kinda
nice that the Duke Point run is on sale on the weekend but they have
changed their sched and now there is no late run home on Saturday
night... we might need to arrange for camping in the Cloverdale hall
next year for us island folks!

Show was good (had to miss the snow run because we were bringing home
a boat trailer) glad to hear you had fun on the run! Lots of cool
rovers there at the show... pretty awesome that Dave won with that
sharp 110 of his (well done).

Hey Greg

Sounds like are quickly becoming our "go to guy" when it comes to
Landy Trannies! Well done on tackling those tricky inner workings. I
have a tow-bar that you are welcome to use if a trailer or tow-truck
don't work out for you.

I'm finally back working on the Rover. I got the transmission back together, clutch and transmission installed, a few bit cleaned-up and am about to put the transfer case back on. I learned a lot about different series of transmissions while I was at it and am quite conversant now with how they go together (and come apart). I had mine together and apart about twenty times before I finally got it sorted. Seems an early second gear looks totally different from a later second gear once you "click" into what to look for. No I get to fuss over which transfer case to put in. One with low gearing in low range, or the standard? H'mm? The one with the lower gearing has a smaller diameter shaft that has some wear on it. The wear didn't change in the two years use I put it through, but I kept oil in it and positioned the shaft to where I thought the wear would see the least loading. The other T cases are in good order.
A couple things caught my attention. One, my memory is going. I was about to order a bunch of parts that I already bought in my last order. Two, it is really hard to install parts that aren't made correctly. I had a hell of a time installing a special locking nut over the lock plate when the lock plate wouldn't go in the slots. Seems the hole was stamped off-centre when the lock plate was made. Good thing I still had an old one that was in good shape.
I have to move the whole Rover by the end of the month. I've been renting a shop for the last year and haven't been over there enough to warrant the rent. I'm going to move it to a neighbours shop, bigger and much closer. I'm not going to count how many parts I have to move but it is almost as many as it take to make a 109 SW. There isn't much still together. I plan on getting the driveline back in place and maybe bolt the box back on. Then at least I'll have someplace to load the bulkhead, fenders, seatbox Etc. Etc. I'll get a tow truck to move it unless I can beg borrow or steal a trailer.
That's all for now folks.

Thanks for getting it back up. It was missed. Might I suggest, if you are serving it locally or through a server that allows php support, to go with something like the Gallery. http://gallery.menalto.com/
I've been using it for years to serve my own pictures on my own website: www.katrinanathan.com
It's free and its very easy to install and use.
Cheers

Hi Glen

If it is an earlier Disco it is basically a Range Rover Classic with a
different body... expect similar problems to an RRC (electrical
gremlins, leaks, bit of inner body corrosion problems). On the other
hand, being that it is basically a newer version of an RRC you'll get a
great ride both on and off road and pretyy awesome off-road capability
form a "stock" truck. The prices seem to vary alot on used Discos but
high gas prices seem to be driving doen the used market prices.

Hi All

I need to sell my 1988 Range Rover as I need more of a "truck" to tow
my boat and for a small business venture I have going. The rover has
had lots of work done to it over the last few years and I have used it
as a daily driver. Has some of the usual range rover quirks (leaks,
electrical hiccups) but many of the expensive "typical" pagie repairs
have already been done (fuel tank, rad, cam shaft, brakes, water pump,
exhaust system, cats, sensors... etc). I would like to get $2500 for it
(probably worth more than that in parts alone) or would take a trade on
a series long wheel base in similar condition of roadworthiness.

Drop me an email at look2rr at telus.net or call 250 715 6757 if
interested

Cheers, Rob

Glenn,

The company is Whitham Vehicle Specialists.

The site is http://www.witham-sv.com The next auction, which is
posted, is January 22nd. I was there in November and they are great
people. They are short on Land Rovers because of some war going on..ha
ha..

There is one of the best collection of unique Land Rovers in the world
but not for sale.

Prices lately have been going for less than "guide" so don't hesitate
to bid just what you can afford. If you want to discuss them please
give me a call..604-739-3019.

Enjoy..Stuart

Regards, Rob

A tow bar sounds great. I might take you up on that. I have a line on a trailer but it isn't confirmed yet.

Hey Greg

Sounds like are quickly becoming our "go to guy" when it comes to
Landy Trannies! Well done on tackling those tricky inner workings. I
have a tow-bar that you are welcome to use if a trailer or tow-truck
don't work out for you.

The prices seem to vary alot on used Discos but
high gas prices seem to be driving doen the used market prices.

different body... expect similar problems to an RRC (electrical
gremlins, leaks, bit of inner body corrosion problems). On the other
hand, being that it is basically a newer version of an RRC you'll get a
great ride both on and off road and pretyy awesome off-road capability
form a "stock" truck. The prices seem to vary alot on used Discos but
high gas prices seem to be driving doen the used market prices.

Regards, Rob
Ladysmith

Drop me an email at look2rr at telus.net or call 250 715 6757 if
interested

Cheers, Rob
Ladysmith

Hey guys, I'm looking for a daily driver, what's your opinion on a 98 Disco? What's a reasonable price for one in good shape? Glenn
