The Rover-Landers of BC

I am in the final stages of converting my SII 109 to diesel and was just wondering if anyone knows what is required with regards to altering the registration and going through aircare?

One other question. My local exhaust shop tells me that most turbo diesel exhausts he does for Landcruisers run straight back with no muffler. Anyone do this on their Rover? If so, does it matter with aircare or vehicle inspection? I can attest that running a turbo diesel without muffler does not appear to add much in the way of noise.

Any info appreciated.

I ran my Peugeot turbo diesel exhaust straight back. Its throaty, but not loud.

As for Airscare, no trouble without a muffler, but request an idle only test. Diesel Rovers might be flagged now for idle only. Its worth a phone call, or side counter visit to make sure it happens. There is no need to beat up an old truck on a dyno just to prove its not a powerful as a newer domestic diesel.

I put a diesel into my truck and when I registered her I just told the agent that it was changed to diesel fuel, no problem.

As far as a muffler goes I think that some back pressure is important for the engine but I would talk to some one like

PS I put a stainless muffler and pipe on mine

On my Peugeot diesel conversion, I had them put a small muffler towards the back, looks just like a cherry bomb glasspack, creates very little back pressure, but it does have a couple of tubes inside and includes a spark arrestor. Note that on many US trails, including those at Montrose, Colorado and some in Washington, they are requiring a spark arrestor in the exhaust. Might want to check on that when you go to purchase the muffler.

Thanks for the response. I think If I don't run a muffler I will always be questioning just how much louder this thing is than needs to be! Finally got around to driving it once again after 1.5 years of being parked and almost forgot just how much fun that really is!

It is very common for people to not use any muffler on a turbo diesel. It does add noise, but mostly is only audible if you are outside in the direction of the exhaust pipe. There is no techinal requirement for one. Back pressure is not needed.
