Tire Chains! - Pete's offer to group purchase

I'm planning on buying a set of RUD Grip 4x4 tire chains for my 110 and thought if others were interested, we could place a single, larger order to save on shipping. I'll be buying them through Bill Burke's 4-Wheeling America, who is an authorized RUD dealer, because of their great price of ~ US$194 for a complete set of four. In the process of talking to the Bill Burke people, I learned that Rich Williams from the Pacific Coast Rover Club is gathering orders for his club as well and that if we combine our orders and total 25 or more sets, the shipping will be free. So far, Rich has a dozen sets. If the chains are ordered individually, shipping will likely be between $35 and $50 per set.
RUD will not ship to Canada unless through one of their dealers so if we do get them with the Pacific Coast guys, the order will be shipped to Seattle and one of the PCRC guys will bring them up. If we get them on our own, I'll have them shipped to Blaine and I'll pick them up.
I'm planning to finalize the order with Rich by November 2 so if you're interested I'll need US$194 + GST + PST + duty (if applicable is TBD).
Regards,
Pete

Which version of the Rud chains are we talking about and can we get them to fit 255/85R16 tires?
Thanks.

Hi Andrew,
They're called the Grip 4x4 on Bill Burke's website and from what I can tell by the RUD website and the pair I borrowed from Mike, I believe they're the compact Grip V with the heavy duty square-form links. They are available for 255/85R16, this is the size I'm getting and the price is the same regardless of the size.
I'll comfirm this with BB4WA.

You can count me in on this Pete I've seen these chains in action they are quick to install and you can even race with them on.

BB4WA confirmed that the Grip 4x4 and the heavy duty Compact Grip V are the same. RUD recently changed the name. These are the same chains I borrowed from Mike this past weekend.
And you're right Shawn, you can race on them, and occasionally, even win...

I'd be in for a set of 4 for the 255/85R16 size. I could pick them up at Founders day if they where there and then use them the next day on the snow flake chase ;)

Andrew, good point about Founders Day, I hadn't thought about it. If any other out-of-towners are interested, Founders day might be a good opportunity to pick them up (and test them out), or have someone else pick them up for you...

I'd take a set. Do you do Paypal payments or would you rather a more normal method? Also have you checked what the duty would be at customs? Likely 6-7%? And if you are bringing across 10+ sets you can guarantee they'll charge GST & PST...
Let me know the total and how you want paid.

Hi Pete, Yes count me in as well for a set to fit 255/85R16. What is the deadline for payment, November 2nd or do you want it earlier?

I have split this post in order to keep it on track. If you want to purchase a set of chains through Pete's offer, post here. If you want to discuss the merits of various chains, post in the Tire Chains General discussion post.

I was not just discussing the type of chains. I was saying that you can get chains locally for less than that price. Why go to the trouble of a group buy??

If you can get the same RUD chains locally, I'm certainly interested. The only local RUD dealer that I know of told me if I could get the Compact Grip V's for $200/set, I should go for it because he could not match the price.

Taxes and duty: GST (6%) + PST (7%) = 13%
I don't know if we'll be subject to duty or not or what the % will be. If anyone has any insight, let me know.
Payment: Unless you make prior arrangements with me directly, I'll need money in hand by November 2. Cash or checks, sorry I don't have a Paypal account. The actual price is US$193.80 so I'd like 193.80 + 13% or CDN$219 up front. We'll work out the duty, if any, and the exchange rate when you get your chains (I'll be happy to show you my credit card statement for the exchange rate).
Regards,
Pete

Andrew,
I've never used it but it seems simple. If you cover the cost on my side ($2.50 I think), I'm willing to give it a try.

Hey Bernie,
Consider yourself down for a set, are you on 255/85's?
Andrew,
The tire chains will drop ship directly from RUD so if they're in stock, I'd expect that the shoe chains could be part of the shipment. If you're serious, I can ask when I place the order for the tire chains.

Pete
