Hey guys,

This looks like the place to ask about rovers , I've been into diesel landcruisers for the past ten years or so, have had a bunch, main one being an fj45 pickup that's modified up the wazoo, diesel etc etc...( it's green, lives in chemainus)

long story short, I'm selling it because I want some more room, I don't wheel often enough to warrant such a built truck, a back seat for the dogs and camping gear would be nice, and I don't really like cruiser wagons.

So, what I'm thinking of doing, is picking up a 109 5 door , doing a diesel conversion ( I'm allergic to spark plugs... 8) )

I have tons of cruiser parts around, so it'd likely be a toyota 3b and 5 speed for the engine.

I'm a square peg round hole kinda guy....

So, figgered I'd say hello, put the word out, I see a few rovers around in chemainus/crofton duncan and I'd love to be able to poke around someones 5 door, to get more of a feel for them.

and of course to put the word out if anyone knows of one in the backyard around here. cheap with no engine would probably suit me.

there's a tempting one in langley, but I'm not quite ready to jump headfirst into this just yet. if it's still for sale when my 45 is gone, I'll go check it out , I like to keep my mainland visits down to about 1 a year.

pimping up the 45 to sell is going to occupy most of my time for the next while, but thought I'd get the process going.....

cheers,
ryan

Ryan,

I thought that FJ45 rotted out from underneath you years ago! ... or was there another one? We used to keep our boat where you are.. now down a few floats. Welcome to the forum. I'm putting a diesel into a 110 at the moment. All LR equipment though not Toyota. We're in Victoria if you are interested in having a look.

Cheers

yeah, used to have a bj40/42, it's the one that died a slow death, only finished building the pickup a year or so ago.

which boat was it? the name JD isn't dingin' any bells for me....( but I suck at names)

I happen to have a good 3b and a tranny or two kicking around, so that's why I'm leaning that way.

cheers

County 110 SW in Vic for sale

Ryan, (and others)

I too am new, having joined today. My last 'interesting' veh was a BJ 42, and I'm also now looking for a similar beast to you: longer wheelbase, utilitarian, etc. A diesel MoD 110 would be the cat's whiskers I think, though I may end up with an HJ 60.

There is a 5 door 83 110 , RHD posted on this forum in the for sale section. Hopefully you have found it. I haven't talked to him about it, nor do I know him.

I do know of an 88 sitting rotting in someone's back yard on Hartland rd, but don't know the owners.

Good luck,

Chris Scott

Hey Chris,

Friend of mine in vic actually has a nice hj for sale, can give you his # if you're interested...(pm if so)

I'm sorta downsizing a bit , my 45 had reached the point where you look at it and see dollar signs, so my plan is to pick up a cheap non running 109, and get rolling for less than 5g's.

should be very doable. have a couple to look at soon, but for the moment, there's a guy desperately trying to get on a ferry to come look at my truck, and hopefully buy it...so at the moment, I'm typing with my fingers crossed...

cheers,
ryan

Is the friend with the HJ Dan? I have spoken to a Dan about his and will see it end Feb. If not, please send contact info.

Test drove a 110 yesterday down here. I actually didn't know they were quite tiny in the cab. I'm 6'4" and it was pretty leg-cramped.

Chris

cramped

I think "MUD stuff 4x4" make raised/extended seat rails to help that problem. Great if it's a model with no bulkhead behind the front seats.

110$ at expedition exhange (nice guys in california)

Yep, that's Dan, it's a solid truck, one of the cleanest ones I've seen in a while as far as rust goes. Driven in it a bunch of times.

45 cabs are pretty tiny too, I'm only 5'10, and the seat is permanently back as far as it can go.

Fortunately, the guy who came to look at my 45 was a little dude, so he loved it, and the ol' beast was on her way to Kamloops last night.

So, search for a new project is officially" on like donkey kong..."

I haven't been on here for a while so I've been missing some activity. Welcome aboard!

For a 109 station wagon, there are two for sale as a pair in Duncan on the highway at Sprott Road. The owner of the car repair place beside Highway Autobody has a couple. IIRC they are all there but one has a bad chassis. The 109 SW has no bulkhead behind the drivers seat so can easily be adapted to allow the seat to be farther back for those 6'4" drivers, just make sure you duck when you climb in, once you're in there is more than enough head room. It doesn't bother the rear seat passenger as they has piles of leg room back there.

And, yes. David mentioned you were looking for a 109.

errr...so yeah, I bought em...hence the for sale post of the 2 door 109.

I probably paid a bit too much for them, but it was damn convenient having them less than 5 minutes from my house.

but if i did pay too much it was only a couple hundred really, so not worth sweating over in the grand scheme of things.

I may update this thread as the lunacy progresses.

any purists out there are really going to hate me pretty soon...

I am Chemainus as well

I just bought a 1984 110 and I am going to be doing some work on it aswell. I live in Chemainus to so it would be cool if we could hook up to help each other out.

I haven't noticed much in the way of " project threads" on this board, the other ones I frequent are always full of them, so I figgered I'd make something of an update to this.

So anyways, I've made some progress. It isn't just an ill smelling wasp farm sitting in the driveway filling the wifes eyes with joy anymore.

( and I'm not kidding about the wasp farm, unbefinglievable how many nests were between the roofs...)

It's essentially going to be a landcruiser, with a 109sw body, the only rover mechanicals or electricals I'll be using are " possibly" the wiper motor and heater core.
3b diesel, 5 speed, power steering, and 4 wheel disc brakes. ( I have something of an allergy to spark plugs and drums.) I may throw a turbo on there once it's running...

Heater core is dependant on the tranny tunnel I make, if I have room I'll use an fj40 heater in the middle.

Mainly so the passenger has some leg room .

wiper motor, if it works ok, I'll leave it, but I suspect it's going to be turfed in favour of one that operates above the speed of " slow with a hint of urgency"

Presently, it's sitting on landcruiser axles, with an lc frame. I made a sub frame of sorts, so that I could use the cruiser body mount locations, and use rubber mounts.

worked out nicely that 1.5x3 box tubing works great to replace the rusty bit of channel under the doors, and ads some strength to an otherwise flimsy body, and makes it super easy to throw some sliders on.

Kindof have the pedal box and steering column mocked up, I'm at the point where I need to poke the engine in there and see how it fits. My plan is to shuffle the drivers seat inboard an inch or two, as it don't much care for how the rovers jam you into the door.

Pedal box was a tad awkward, but turns out an fj40 box fits in there quite well, and leaves room for a tilt column. ( and yes, I was bemusedly shaking my head as the rover clutch and brake MC's sailed over my shoulder into the scrap metal bin...)

How much I can move the seat towars centre depends on how much room I have around the bellhousing, as I need to make some more hoof room in the middle.

So we'll see how that goes. So far, everythings fit rather well, considering I was taking a wild guess that the rover body would actually fit on the frame.

I'm going to attempt a pic or two, but if the compexities defeat me, I'll just post a link.

Bear in mind, it's in it's original splendour cosmetics wise, at some point I will paint it, but I want to get most of the fab work done before I deal with the fripperies.

and yes, the shop is due for the next clean out. I had a rather vigorous torching session a few nights back and the results are the mound of crap under the truck.

ok, tried the image tags, couldnt get them to work, so here's a link to my photobucket site. http://s80.photobucket.com/albums/j171/ ... to1/rover/
