The Rover-Landers of BC

Anyone know of a north american equivalent of the Lucas 45Amp Alternator, LR Part Number RTC5682N / STC229 ?

The unit in question is in a 130 with a 2.5 DT, but I think it's the same part for all non air-con models up to 200 Tdi.

Alternatively, if you'd good experiences with a non direct replacement, please let me know what you fitted.

I've had a bit of a look and not found anything with that style of mount and of the same physical size. It is an 84 mm main mount with the adjuster up and on the left. It is used only on some European cars.

Some BMWs and some VWs seem to be similar or the same, but are not common. If you buy a Rover one, get the newer 65 amp unit (200TDI Defender) as they are the same mount. If you want even bigger, some (not all) of the 100 Amp 300TDI alternators can be modified to fit.

The cheapest solution is usually to get it rebuild locally.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll go for the 65 Amp Rover/Lucas part - about $100 plus shipping from the UK and duty - if I can't find a local rebuilder witha good reputation.

One problem with living outside a major center of population is that the kinds of business that can do this kind of thing (rebuilding an alternator) tend to be some distance away. Once you factor in the gas/diesel to do two round trips to Victoria and, more importantly, the time involved, the rebuild has to be darn inexpensive to come out ahead compared to getting a brand new unit shipped.

I'd like to use local tradespeople to do this kind of thing, but my largese only extends to the point where it's about the same cost as importing.

You could also ask around the vendors on the coast. They might stock or in the least routinely get alternators rebuilt, I don't know.

They are not that expensive from the UK, although the shipping can hurt on those heavy parts.

I think that I mentioned PC Auto electric in another of your threads and JD mentioned one in Victoria.

Sometimes living outside main centres of population mean that you are closer to quality work for this sort of thing and don't have to drive into the big smoke to get quality work.
