I have just noticed that the shift lever on my 74 series three has become loose between the first-second position and the position into which I would select reverse, without any resistance. Is this my imagination of is there a spring that has broken or gone missing? Gear selection is normal.

There is an o-ring on the ball at the end of the stick which if worn would produce some slop. There is also a spring on the reverse gear lockout gate that can break. These are the first two likely candidates but to know for sure what is the cause of your slop you will have to go looking. It is not difficult to get in there - floors up and then the tunnel cover followed by 4 cap screws to release the shifter assembly.

Hi John : So far so good. I found a broken spring on the trans housing. There is another one of the same size still in place. A cursory look elsewhere shows everything in place and in good shape. Is there any chance you might have replacement springs of an appropriate size? I am at 604-228-1680 if you would rather call. Thanks again

Thanks to John, who made the initial diagnosis, Aart, who had the lockout gate springs, and Chris Palmer, who had a spare lockout gate, I am back on the road.
This is actually a pretty simple fix although if you need to remove the gear lever and its bracket for working room you need a couple of Whitworth spanners. Thanks to all who helped. Larry
