1995 disco I

Power steering pump appears to have a small leak and my reservior appears to be very low.

I have googled this, but I am confused. Can I just top it up with new fluid? What specific kind of fluid should I put it.. Do I need to drain whats left first?

Yuppa,

These power steering systems are notorious for leaking but it is important to keep it at the correct level.
On my 91 Range Rover I use Penzoil ATF Dextron 3 (same as the Auto transmission) I would think yours is the same but check your manual to confirm this.
I dont see any point in draining your existing oil unless you think it has been contaminated by something (water / dirt / wrong oil).

Have you been getting any noise when turning, especially on full lock? Has the steering felt extra heavy at idle / low revs?

I have not noticed anything bad yet.

While trying to locate a coolant leak, I noticed the power steering fluid leak and low fluid level. ( I was told by a non land rover user that its my power steering fluid)

My manual = rave cd, I can check it when I get home after work but I was kind of hoping someone could tell me the exact brand of power steering fluid so I could top it up on the way home..

My google searches have only served to confuse me, as every forum tells a different type.. (In your example, ATF, some people say use it, but they appear to be ranger rover & defender users - disco users seem to say it will corrode my seals or something..)

Ive also seen some people saying disco I uses transmission fluid as power steering fluid, and another forum says just use standard synthetic power steering fluid but add lucas snake oil.. ?
