I know that LR 4.0 v8s call for premium fuel, and that's what we've been using. Other than a loss of power, what disadvantages are there to running regular? Will the fuel injection take care of the detonation and such? How many run regular? With the fuel mileage of these beasts, premium just hurts.

There is always some debate over the use of premium fuel. Most disco owners on the WEB report better fuel mileage with premium fuel – making up for some of the extra expense.

I have only used regular a couple of times (when I couldn’t get premium) and I think there may have been some detonation going on under full throttle – was hard to tell. I have used mid grade a couple of times and have not felt any difference over premium.

Elevation and air temperature will effect detonation. If you are high and it is cold you can theoretically use lower octane fuels.

There was a thread recently on discoweb.org (Is super unleaded really necessary?) with the same question, most felt premium should be used.
