SIII Temperature Sensor on diesel head

So I'm told that I have a missing temperature sensor on the head of my SIII diesel

What the heck does that do and do I need it and if I don't need it how do I plug it? I have a gas 2.25l and I believe it's just plugged, is it pipe threading?

The engine temperature sensor is normaly a good thing to have working.

The temperature sensor working in conjunction with a dash mounted temperature gauge keeps the operator of the vehicle informed of the coolant temperature in the engine. Engines that do not reach a suitable operating temperature will not be running as efficiently as they could be and if too cold the lubrication system may not be providing adequate protection. Running an engine too hot can quickly lead to failure.
I seen to recall trying to keep mine running at about 90°C.
That temperature sensor!!

For some reason I wasn't cluing in, <smacks>, this is my first SIII engine I was making the assumption this was something special for the diesel engine and in actuality the sensor has just moved from the front on the SIIa head to the rear on the SIII head... Yes a engine temperature sensor is highly recommended and useful!
