Towing with a Defender 300TDi

I am considering purchasing a small travel trailer to tow behind my Defender 110 300TDi. I have read all the articles that say the vehicle can tow 3,500 kgs but what is really practical for a long distance?
I have slogged up the Jackass Mtn hill in second gear towing a SII on a trailer and hope that wouldn't be my long-term experience.
What experience do people have? The two trailers I am looking at are a 16' / 19' Unit base Weights 3261 lbs / 3,763 lbs and GVWR 4,300 lbs/ 4,500 lbs.
