300Tdi Temperature sender/gauge problem

Hi folks,
I'm sorting out a few bugs in my most recent lapse in reason, and first on the list is a temperature gauge that's not reading properly. It reads very low. This is in a V8 Discovery with a 300Tdi retrofitted. The gauge seems to respond to being grounded briefly through a tester. The sender is giving about 2k ohms when disconnected.
Could this be an incompatibility between V8 gauge/ Tdi sender dating to the original diesel conversion? Is there a procedure to test the sender, or is it best to order a new one? I have ordered a digital multi-gauge and a slew of sensors to install, which I think will be better than the stock temp gauge, but I wouldn't mind trying to get it going all the same.
