The Rover-Landers of BC

Am thinking of buying a 2-horse trailer... so doing my homework :wink: .. would my 1996 Land Rover Disco be capable of this? and any idea where I can get it 'equipped' (ie: a hitch put on) in Victoria/Saanich?

Short answer, Yes.

Longer answer, the wheelbase is quite short on a Disco, so I found towing a horse trailer gave a much bouncier ride for the horse (and for the vehicle occupants), compared to towing with a long wheelbase pickup. this is further exacerbated by the soft coil sprung suspension.

Some things you can do to help...

Heavy Duty rear springs.

A hitch with equalizer bars integrated into it. Although the owners manual on my D2 says to not use reese-type equalizer bars, I think because it basically reduces the suspensions capability to articulate, I found this to be the best solution to a smooth ride.

Power-wise, the 3.9 is capable of pulling a horse trailer, but it won't be a fast ride, which of course you don't want towing a live animal. I was also told by a Land Rover mechanic to pull it out of drive and use 3rd as my top gear. I found this worked well to keep the engine in a rev zone that had enough power and didn't lug the drivetrain.
