Snorkels

Ordered one off EBay for $259.00 USD
(non ARB)
Got it & it was for a non-ABS Disco.
I just sent it back
(postage (Canada Post) was more to send it to Texas than it was to ship it from England)
Can't understand why ARB is the only one who makes them & charge so much for a piece of plastic.
I can't find a snorkel for under $310.00 CDN, ($400.00 CDN shipped)
Now thinking of spending the money on a set of Front Radius Arms instead (for the same price)
Saw the Mantec ones (very expensive) that run behind the front fender & can't see why I can't make one?

Just a piece of plastic.... have you any idea how much an injection moulding tool costs... your talking 10's of 1000's of $..... apart from that there is also the machined alum parts, fittings, packaging & all the other associated costs involved in bringing a product to market.
For what you get, the cost is quite reasonable & you won't be able to make anything that looks as neat & tidy for less. Also bear in mind actual sales volume will be quite small as it's a niche product so don't expect to get it for $50 !
Just my 2c.....

for 400 dollars, i bet you can find a welder on the mainland to make you a custom one out of thin walled aluminium.

$400. may get u a bit of welded tube.....then again maybe not, fabrication not very cheap last time i checked. And there is no way you are getting anything like a manufactured snorkel kit.... custom made for $400 installed with the bits and bobs need to finish it off. And not talking bout bodged up ABS pipe etc etc.
:D :D

i doubt you are going to have the ARB installed for 400 either. that was just the price the OP quoted for the snorkel and shipping.
but i do believe you can get a welder for 100 per hour to spend a couple of hours to weld you up some nice pipe and probably cost under 100 in materials. if they cant do such a simple design i a couple of hours then you picked the wrong guy.
how long does it take a good muffler shop to custom bend your exhaust and weld it up for you? same idea ( not saying take it to a muffler shop but as an example of fabricating time).

OK.... so were going to make a Mantec type..... umm....
Lets see what's involved in fitting one....
http://www.discovery2.co.uk/snorkel.html
I assume we'll also be removing the front fender for access because if I was a welder I'd not be crawling around under the wheel well trying to measure it up & trial fit it.
Then you have the problem of attaching it to the air box inlet that isn't round but oblong. So, it'll need an adaptor making to ensure a good water tight seal. Bit pointless unless you get this right....
That all takes time & thus the costs go up, remember we only have $400 to play with.... already spend $45 plus shipping on the top cap, so $65 total. Say $100 on tubing and $30 on nuts & bolts etc. Allow $50 for powdercoating all the parts.... leaves us with $155 for labor.... my local shop charges $55/hr for a welder.... so, you've got him for just under 3hrs.
Best of luck... or just buy the Safari, fit it & go play..... :D
After moving to Canada, I learn't that making all your own parts isn't always the best option as the time saved by buying & fitting a ready made item can be spent actually getting out & enjoying your toy... snow arrives in late October

Everyone in this discussion has good points to make, a crap piece of plastic at your front door for $400 does feel like a rip but someone has done all the thinking for you by designing it to work. Reza makes the point that you should be able to do it yourself for less, that's true if it is you doing all the work from start to finish. Custom work costs money, even from a backyard welder and they will definitely not spend the time on all the details or devote the hours needed to install it. I'm with the rest here, jar loose with the 400 bucks, you won't regret it.

No offense taken :D
What I ment in stateing that $400 is alot of money for a snorkel is that I can get new Radious Arms for the same price.
I can build a snorkel but I can't build Radious Arms.
I have found other places in England & Malaysia that make ABS snorkels, but they don't make tham for the Disco 1 LHD.
These places only charge 100.00 GBP ($160.00 CDN)
If I did build one it would be a Mantec style out of stainless steel tubeing.
Welding wouldn't be a problem, I was a fabricator long before I started driveing truck.
Here is a pic of the type of stuff I used to build

if you can fabricate make it yourself, it cant be that hard. a bit of abs pipe and a few cuts in the wing. buy some offset bushings and the snorkel top from the UK and you will look the part. I have had my offset bushings in for over a year with no issues yet.
