Green Mountain Rover Run Saturday Oct 8th

#1 Post by Rob » Sun Oct 02, 2011 8:31 pm

We are going to try for the annual non-scratch drive Saturday Oct 8th up to green mountain. We are leaving at 8:30AM sharp from the Frog and Puddle Cafe which is beside the Cassidy Pub on the Island Highway just north of the Nanaimo Airport.

It looks like we need to be out of the Green Mountain area by 3:00 pm so we have to leave on time in the morning!!!!! Bring the usual stuff lunch, radios, lawn chairs, cameras (the views are awesome) etc.

This drive is weather dependent and will be cancelled if it is raining. The run is on old roadways so there shouldn't be any "scratch" worries but expect some axle articulation and a climb near the end. Any Land Rover in reasonable mechanical condition should be able to handle the run without difficulty. Non-rovers are always welcome but they tend to get relegated to the back of the line :P

Hope to see you there!

Do we have a verdict on whether this is going ahead or not? The forecast I saw said sunny/cloud in the morning with rain in the afternoon. Are we on?

The trip is a GO! The weather forecasters say the rain will be in the afternoon so hopefully they are correct. Not the starting point is the same (parking lot by the Cassidy Pub) however the restaurant there as well as the washroom at the rest stop don't open until 9 so be sure to take care of your morning coffee or other liquids (in and out) before you get there! I am taking my D2 so there will be a couple of extra seats if anyone wants to ride in the "Plushmobile"

Cheers, Rob

Have a good time. Regrets that I won't be there, my 109 needs me to change the diffs. There seems to be some extra noises and vibrations that shouldn't be there. It's running better now after I adjusted the valve clearance. How can one adjust itself so it is open all the time? (rhetorical question, no need to answer here.)

Have a good day folks

Well? How'd it go folks? I got lots done at home for a change. Delivery of a backhoe and got the guy to park the trailer in the field. Four yards of gravel brought home in my pick-up truck and unloaded, center console built for the boat (not quite finished). A bit of clean-up and some work done for Erica for an art show she was helping with.

It was a nice day for a rover run! 4 trucks in all went on the run, coilers and leafers, gas, diesel, 4 bangers and V8s all in the mix: Margaret and Victor in their pristine Dormobile, Dave and John in the equally nice series 88, Jeremy and Sharon in a sharp white 200TDI x-mod 110 as well as Rob and Lisa in the trusty green D2. All the vehicles behaved well and so did the occupants (mostly). The climb up Green Mountain was uneventful with only the slightest of tail-dragging through the gullies. Ran across some side trails with nasty wash-out and noticed some potential washouts developing where the culverts were getting blocked. Made it to the parking lot but we were fogged-out higher-up and decided a foot race to the top was probably not a good idea. The clouds and mist drew down upon us during lunch and the 8 degree air had a nasty bite due to the wind and rain.

On the way back we detoured-off to the south of the Nanaimo Lakes and followed a high path overlooking the lakes. Nice trail but met a group on quads who told us the gate was closed ahead so we doubled-back to the main line for some conversation along the river bank. The day ended much as it started with 4 rovers and 8 happy people, nothing bent, broken or missing... The cookies were awesome too!

Cheers, Rob
