I've put a Weber 34 ICH on my 56 86". Runs reasonably well, but seems slightly rich at idle, lean at cruise, and very rich on acceleration.


Here is the current jetting:


air jet 190
Emulsion tube f6
main jet 165
idle jet 50
pump jet 50
needle & seat 175

Can anyone recommend jets they have used on the 34 ICH that have worked?

I installed a wideband o2 sensor to get a handle on the mixture. It is running rich at idle (11 afr), and lean at cruise (15-16 afr)

I've picked up 40 and 45 idle jets and 170 and 175 main jets which I will try this weekend.

Keep us informed as to your results as I may end up going this route if (and when) I fire up mine using the Solex PB1.

Went down on the idle jet to 45, up on the main jet to 170.

When I do the idle adjustment according to weber I'm a bit rich (11 afr) but that is where it runs best. Cruise is right on 14.

I still have an intermittent miss on idle. It goes away if I severely retard the timing, but then it won't rev at all. Distributor is a new electronic replacement, new cap new rotor, new coil, new leads, new plugs. At a loss for the miss, but overall it's running great.

Update on the miss.

Still has a minor miss.
Have tried gapping down to .020. got worse.
Tried a known good coil. no change.
Have a wideband 02 so should be able to see a vacuum leak as a lean condition. reads 12-13 at idle which is bang on. also tried a propane torch to find vacuum leak. nothing found.
Have set the Intake valves, but have not set the exhaust valves.
Have been told that the valve springs can get weak with age, but I don't want to dismantle the engine to check
tried seafoaming the engine, which produced a lot of smoke but no noticeable difference.

picking up a used msd box for cheap and will try this weekend.

Also learned that you can't change the GVWR on a series one to over 5001 kg for the commercial vehicle - no aircare trick. GVWR can't be more than 2.5 times net weight.

I guess worse comes to worse I'll wait until Aircare goes away.

Have you tried posting this up on LRSOC...these guys are the experts and should be able to set you straight.

I did. They pointed me towards compression (which I think is okay) and possibly the weak valve spring. I'm not sure why the weak valve spring would cause an issue at idle and go away at higher rpm though.

I'm wondering if it isn't some funny grounding issue where the engine block isn't grounded well enough.

In any event I'll see if the MSD box helps at all, set the exhaust valve clearances and go from there.

Update

MSD 5 box I bought was fried. Replaced a couple of transistors and its good to go. Miss at idle is gone. Went to aircare today and passed. I got 6 months insurance, in December I'll get a year and hopefully never have to go through aircare again.

So far the weber 34 with the above changed jets is running very well. Idle around 13.5 afr, acceleration around 13, and cruise bounce between 14.5 and 15.
