soldering

I need to re-solder a metal stay to the brass rad reservoir on my Morgan.
The question is: do I have to clean all the old solder off the reservoir and stay down to bare metal before I try to solder the stay back on?
Any other soldering hints are gracefully accepted. I will use a torch, solder and flux.

Hi Larry
In preparation of joining the two pieces I would heat each individually till the old solder melted and either brushed the majority of the old solder away with a wire brush (and/or compressed air). Each piece should be "tinned" individually coating the faces to be joined lightly with melted solder prior to marrying them together and adding adequate solder to ensure integrity of the join. There may be enough of the original solder left that tinning will not be required.

Thanks for your help. I have chickened out because I was concerned about opening a seam near where the repair was to take place. I have soldered copper pipes but nothing as "important" as the Morgan rad so I decided to let the pros do it.
With VanDusen over - two seconds in class - both the Morgan and the Series 3 are now "in the garage" with the Landie in need of some frame welding.
