The Hunters Range Jeep Trail was planned to be the highlight of the OORA event in July, however due to high snow pack it was not accessible until just a couple of weeks ago.

So, we are planning a Jeep Trail run on August 18th, 2012. Departure will be at 10 AM from Cooke Creek Rec. Site. (50.605271° -118.846095°)

Some of us will be camping both Friday and Saturday nights at the recreation site ($12 a night if the guy comes by) and you are welcome to join us if you're coming from a distance.

Here's a link to the tracklog from one of our previous trips: http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1237600

The Jeep Trail is like a mini-Whipsaw, taking about 6-7 hours to drive through, including stops to see the scenery.

Hope to see you there! Post here if you're planning on coming.

cheers, Dave

Hey Guys,

I originally thought I would be able to come, but I am going to have my little guy that day as my wife wants to do a little bit of work. I thought I might be albe to bring him with us but on second thought I think it would be too long of a day for him in a car seat. If we were doing a shorter run I would definaly bring him along. Something in the 4 or 5 hours max sort of thing is doable. I hope this does not end the run for you guys. I was thinking that a drive along the east side of Mable Lake would be a good one for the fall. Lots of stops along the lake to let the little one out to burn energy off. Keep me posted. Thanks.

Kris

Hey Kris I can lend you a DVD player to keep him busy (even a kid or 2) ?
I've taken Cody out since he was 6 weeks old (DVD's weren't even invented yet)

Dave, could you provide the program you use on your iPad for navigation and where you got the maps from. Please.

Kris: Yes, hopefully we'll have a shorter softer trip later in the season.

Kevin: I think you should have some sort of towing protrusion on the front frame of your Disco, otherwise we'll have to pull you out backwards... methinks better your tried and true Disco for this trip although... you gotta break in the rangie sometime  Have you been driving it in the past couple of weeks?

Chris: I started using GaiaGPS ($6.99 if I recall correctly) for navigation on the iPad however as of January 2012 they lost their licence to Canadian topo maps. They now have Canadian topos again, which you download in advance of your trip, but at this time the detail of roads and trails is severely lacking. They are working on a new set, but so far this is all they offer for Canada. So, as a result, I downloaded the free Avenza PDF Map App. This allows you to purchase as required panels (pages) of the BackRoad MapBook maps, at $2.50 per panel. I found it much cheaper to just buy the full digital version from their website as each zone contains around 50 maps, which would cost about $125 and I get a full zone on http://www.backroadmapbooks.com/ for $50. These provide excellent mapping, but I still use the tracklog features of GaiaGPS in the background as Avenza PDF Maps is very limited. Note that you either need a 3G/Cell version of the iPad or if you have a WIFI version you need to purchase an external plugin GPS such as this one: http://bad-elf.com/products/be-gps-1000/

cheers, Dave

Yes, one and the same. The waypoint I posted above is the turnoff for the recreation site, which is to the right if you're coming in from Enderby, about a half a kilometer down to the river. That's where we'll be camping and meeting in the morning. Chris, let me know when you're planning on arriving and we'll keep an eye out for you.

Cooke Creek Rec Site jammed to the rafters with RVs. not one site open. We're heading up Cook Creek FSR about 9 KM to the grassy meadow close to Spruce Lk Rec Site
Meeting spot will still be the same, at the Cooke Creek Churn FSR & Mabel Lake Rod for a 10 AM departure Saturday morning. we'll be on channel 4.

cheers, Dave
