signals dont work

#1 Post by larry emrick » Tue Sep 11, 2012 12:55 pm

The signal lights on my 74 series three are not working.
I have checked the fuses and replaced the flasher unit (twice) but still no signals.
The hazard signals flash properly and the signal lights all go on when I move the signal wand but they do not flash.
All the other lights are working properly.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks, Larry.

Hey Larry,
If all the signal lights come on but don't flash then I would say the fault has to be connected to your flasher unit.
The flasher unit has a ground (neg) connection, have you checked for good continuity to ground?

Do you have a wiring diagram of the Flasher unit to confirm everything is as it should be?

Cheers, Andy

Sounds like a ground issue. The ground for the rear lights are on top of the rear cross member and is usually nice and crusty. Also could be one of the bulbs? Hazards working is weird though?

My money is on the flasher unit.

My 109 had exactly the same symptons. Went down to North Shore Auto, picked up a new one and presto...blink blink

Thanks for your suggestions. I will start working through them all.
What mystifies me is that the hazard flashers (and all other lights, including the brakes, which are on the same fuse as the signals)) all work.
Are the hazard flashers on the same circuit as the signal flashers? Or is there a separate signal flasher unit in that birds nest of wiring behind the dash?
As to replacing the unit, I started with one from Lordco that did not work, then proceeded to the one that is the proper replacement item and still no joy.
Thinking of a bad ground, is the flasher holder, which appears to be steel, part of the ground?

Thanks to you all.
Larry

Hi Larry,

Is the flasher unit the little 1" canister? If so, there is a version thats about 2.5" long and sends out a much stronger signal. I would try one of those. We used to swap out the old 'normal' flasher units for the heavy duty ones and it regularly made it work, back when I was turning wrenches for a living.

cheers, Dave
