I searched through old threads but couldn't find anything.

I am looking for a simple way to remove old paint from my Series 1. Some of the parts I have stuck on it are red, which don't look great on my blue and silver truck.

Funnily enough, many of those red parts have the original blue paint underneath.

I have tried varsol and acetone, neither made a dent in it. Can you get real paint stripper at an auto store anymore? And will it work better than the acetone did (didn't)? Any recommended brand names?

The body panels are not straight enough for me to take a sander to it.

Ray , you can get good paint stripper at Home Depot ... the " Circa 1800" brand stuff works and is toxic enough to get the job done, there is also a paint/gasket/exposed skin/mucous membrane/kidney function/ stripper called " Chisel " that is a loctite brand available at Acklands if that stuff wont remove it then nothing short of sandblasting will

I used Aircraft paint remover (N.Van Auto Parts) spray bomb and it generally worked fine, however there was this green paint that proved tougher and had to resort to sanding it off.

Dave do you mean the green primer? Or a layer of green finish paint? My challenge is that the red paint that I want to remove is MUCH tougher than the blue paint underneath that I want to keep.

Exactly..same problem...originally blue, but was brush painted with green, that just would not come off...tractor paint maybe....had to strip to metal to get it off.

But should look better with a full single color respray.

I've used Aircraft Coating Remover before and it was VERY effective, but I'm pretty sure it causes long term brain damage. Best done outdoors.

However 3M says it is discontinued.

If I was looking for it now I would try Alder Auto in port kells as they carry a lot of automotive paint supplies.

Ah, yeah, wow. Just read through the MSDS on that stuff. Narcosis, blindness, and destruction of the central nervous system...

I will be picking up a good respirator at Acklands at the same time. Maybe I should just borrow an SCBA from the fire hall.

Use this stuff only outside....and stay upwind of it and you'll be fine.

So the only stuff I could still buy was EZ Strip at Home Depot.

Works ok on the original paint, but the bonnet I was working on had a dozen coats of everything from industrial equipment paint to some sort of orange rubber gasket layer to who knows what else.

I ended up taking the belt sander to it...

That'll do it. I was being facetious with the brain damage comment, but I guess I wasn't off the mark. You could just tell from the smell it wasn't good for nuthin. (irony of double negative intended)

I was thinking a heat gun and a scraper might do the trick as well.
