Hello, I finally got my Rover safety inspected, all good, however driving home from the inspection and I now have oil sprayed all over the windshield ( I have the hood off ). The Oil appears to be coming form the oil filler filter. I have attached a photo. Am I missing anything? should there be a hose from vent on the head or?????
thanks
Geoff

Yes there should be hose and it should go to a port on the intake pipe.

thanks for the reply, after looking at some pics online I see the hose your speaking of. I also see that some have a cap that looks like a radiator cap on the oil filler instead of a filter. see pic.
can I remove the filter?
Geoff

Your oil filler cap doesn't look original as well. It should be mushroom shaped with no gapping hole on the side, the venting should exit the bottomof the cap not the side. The one in the picture above is for later engines with sealed oil venting systems. I think I have an old style cap here.

Sounds like you might have a bit much blow by in addition to an odd mix of caps.

blow by wouldn't surprise me, it is 50 years old. however the engine block has been painted by the previous owner, this means they had the engine out, I would "hope" they rebuilt it then.

The latest setup removed the oil fill stand pipe and replaced it with a blanking plate on the block while also installing a (five main bearing) valve cover with a filler cap. (vented cap to intake)

Prior to that the stand pipe with the rad looking cap was used along with a valve cover cap like yours vented to the intake.

Prior to that the stand pipe had a vented cap sort of like yours and a vented cap on the valve cover, both vented to atmosphere.
