I am cautiously optimistic that I may have dodged the bullet on what I originally though was a blown head gasket, when I discovered grey oil in my series 3. Thanks to all your suggestions on flushing with ATF and another oil change, it has been about two weeks now and the level is constant and the oil is still fresh.
I have also been more careful about driving it longer, rather than the short daily trips of the past.
Strange that in all my decades of driving I have never encountered a situation like that in the past.
So thanks to all your suggestions and thanks to Roverlanders for providing a forum just for such a situation.
