The Rover-Landers of BC

Hi All,

With the good possibility of some sunshine on Saturday a few of us are heading up the west side of Harrison Lake. We will drop down to Hale creek beach and check out to see if there is any updates on the Fossil beach access.

What - A 1 day casual off-road run.
Where - Up the west side of Harrison Lake, down to Hale Creek beach & investigate the Fossil Beach access.
When - meeting at the Subway Restaurant on Highway 7, Mission (34963 Lougheed highway) at 9.00am, grab some breakfast and a take out lunch - There is a gas station (Co-Op) that does Petrol and Diesel next to the Subway. If you need fuel, fuel up first when arriving, departing at 9.30am sharp. Google Link - http://goo.gl/maps/XNnzk
Why - Fresh mountain air, the adventure, beautiful scenery, your Land Rover needs exercise...
What Else - Bring a chainsaw if you have one! Camera, Family friendly. Most likely have a camp fire on the beach. Back on the road at Mission around 4pm.

I'd really like to make this trip. Time might be an issue so I'm wondering how long it takes to get to Hale Creek/Fossil beach from where we meet up on Hwy 7 in Mission. I know that it's tough to tell this time of year because of downed trees etc - but is it about 2 hrs in general?

I'm about 2.5 hours from Mission - if the border isn't backed up. I figure Sumas should be OK at 8 am on a Saturday.

Yes 2hrs would be about right from where we meet in Mission to Hale Creek, that's without any stops or distractions.

Yes the trip on the Island sounds like fun, if I could get the time off work I would go too! Have fun and take lots of photos for the Gallery. Make Sue the official Trip Photographer :color:

Good news that both Hale and Fossil Beaches are now accessible, someone has done a great job of cutting and removing a huge amount of fallen trees and opening up the roads again. The forest fire last year went right down to the beach at Fossil and the thick forest has been thinned out a lot.
Weather was perfect, 8 Rover-Landers spent the fun day exploring and hanging out on the beaches. More photos coming soon...

Thanks Andy and all for a great day trip! It was fun to make new acquaintances and renew some old ones. For a future trip, it would be fun to have a new campfire game called "Who's diff guard is this anyway?". Chris could come into the firelight holding up a part that he's found sweeping the trail behind us, and without checking our trucks we would try to identify which vehicle the part de-parted:)

Good to have you along Bryan, your 2 hour journey up from the US to the meeting point is a good example of keen membership participation...
I like your idea of the campfire game, that one duty of the "Tail Gunner" to keep eyes open and pick up any parts that are falling off our Land Rovers along the way :P

It was a fun day! I enjoyed myself as usual. I am the unlucky recipient of the BC Rovers "scavenger hunt". Thanks to Chris for picking it up! :)

The Terra Firma diff guard (bolt on type) is only a 1-1/2 years old:

Looks it is sheared off where the mounting bolts are located. This is my first time using diff guards on my truck. I used the bolt-on type as it was easier to install instead of the weld on type. Are they meant to fail like this? Perhaps the "give" was intended based on the weak link principle. I need a replacement and wondering if I should purchase the same make as a replacement? Anyone have thoughts? Thanks

I don't suppose there's anything really wrong with the Terrafirma guard, I suspect you just happened to catch a rock just right to tear it off. These look like they would be a good alternative - also bolt on.

The Terra Firma version has cutouts for their logo. Mud/pebbles are more likely to get caught in between the diff housing and the diff guard.Your alternative looks better. It is a solid cover with no holes.

You have order from the UK, but they are about the same cost as the Rover's North part (w/o consideration for shipping).

Andrew, when you say "sheared off", do you mean the metal ring part broke or somewhere else? Any photos of the broken part? I would like to think they would replace it under warranty as it wasn't that old and not a cheap part.

Here is a pic of the diff guard with arrows showing the sheared areas (where the mounting bolt holes used to be located).

I emailed the parts store about a warranty claim (they are major retailer for Terra Firma parts). There has been no response from them.
