Is this what splines are supposed to look like?
I'm not sure, but I think I found my problem.

I would think you have found the problem! Now the trick is to find where the other part went!

Front short shaft at the diff? Always have a spare.

Yep. front short shaft at the diff. It's confusing as to which axles to order. I'll get all the spline counts and numbers off the axle and try to figure it out tonight. Should I swap the long side at the same time? It doesn't look twisted, but may have had a rough life.

Yah, the front short tends to usually go first. The theory is the long gets less shock loading as it has more flexibility. Probably can't hurt to change the long side and keep the old one as a trail spare. Best to have a spare set as they are the weak link closely followed by the diff.
Should be 10 spline inner and 23 spline outer. Most likely AEU2520/1
