TDi Discovery. - Exhaust question

I have a tdi disco 1

I get a lot of exhaust smell in the cabin - when I am driving down hill

Has anyone had this issue or is there an thread on this topic

Is there a modification to the tail pipe that might help this issue?

And on that note has anyone run across a particulate filter for the exhaust that can be retrofit to the 300 tdi exhaust that does not kill the 'proformance' of the engine

Thank for any advice on this issue

Which engine? Is it a stock truck or converted?

I would first look for exhaust leaks in the engine bay.

There is no way to install a DPF. You need a computer controlled engine with integral control of the DPF. If you feel smoke levels are high, you can adjust the settings on the injection pump.

Does it smoke blue when going downhill rather than just a diesel exhaust aroma?
Could be valve seals dried out and cracked.

That's not quite true about DPFs. There are several companies that make retrofit DPFs but they are all focused on the heavy duty market. Here are a few:

http://www.jmdpf.com/diesel-particulate ... on-matthey

The question would be why do you want to? I have a 300tdi and only ever see a slight amount of smoke when on a hill and have the throttle pegged. If you are smoking regularly there is something wrong with the engine. Off the top of my head it could be injectors, timing, valve seals....

As for smell getting into the cabin, I'd start with checking the exhaust system for leaks. If it is leaking under the car you could get some smell. Other thing to check would be window and door seals at the rear of the truck.

If you want a DPF to make your Disco super clean, it would be possible, but would be very expensive and would cost some power and mileage.

All great thoughts and will follow up on these insight

Just finished a drive to Portland and back - great drive and this issue did not arise

So issue is dealing with slower speeds _ so I’ll check exhaust systems

I would have a look at your back door seals.

check the rear floor for rust holes.
