What is the mystery to removing the locking hubs?

What is it I need to know to remove these hubs so I can finish tearing down the front end for our restoration?
I have the bolts undone, I can pull it off about an 1/8" and then it stops dead, and yes they are unlocked. Am I supposed to take the black cover off (held on by a screw as seen in the attached photo). I'm hesitant to do this unless one of you say to as I've not done this before.
Thanks, pat

I believe that you need to remove the set crews to remove that piece. You will find a snap ring holding the hub to the axle. Once the snap ring is removed the hub should slide off

From what I remember when installing a set of the same type on my old 55M37 rainman is correct.

As previously suggested you'll need to remove the three setscrews marked "A" in the supplied diagram and then you can pull off the rotating selector piece (11). After that you'll need to remove the split pin and nut from the end of the half shaft. The drive member should then come right off.

Yup, it all worked out great! Amazing what little grub screws can do!
Thank you all for your help.
