Hi Ralph,
Sounds like there might be a fair amount of damage inside. Bearings, races,CV joints, seals etc. You should definately go inside or have someone do it for you. Depending on where you live there are several good mechanics listed on our supporters tab on this web board that can supply the parts or do the job for you. It sounds like you could limp it to a repair shop but definately avoid any speed. I think Ryan U. just went through this same trauma when returning from his central American vacation so maybe he will offer some words of wisdom.

swivel hub/stub axle
When you say you checked the front axle gear oil, I assume you are talking about the diff?
Have you replaced the one shot grease in the swivel ball? You may have lost most of this when the stub axle was loose.
If the stub axle was loose, the CV is likely contaminated.
Seals and bearings aren't that difficult (I did one last summer)
If you don't have access to any of our local mechanics for help, I've found Rovers North quite helpful.
Just remember: speed, quality, low price - pick any two. I've found Rovers North to be fast, helpful and good quality.
Keith Robinson and Don at Rovertech have also been excellent and very helpful
Cheers,
Roger
Good luck
Roger
