Power Steering "Wobble"

#1 Post by dchsw » Tue Apr 07, 2009 8:26 pm

I've had a niggling problem on my 110 for some time where sometimes I get a wobble on the steering wheel at anywhere from 80 to 120 km/h.

The annoying thing is it's not consistent, one trip it won't wobble at all, the next it'll be quite bad. I initialy assumed wheel balance, so had them re-done but it made no difference.

This afternoon I was under the vehicle getting the drain plug out to change the oil and I noticed some ATF on the chassis and traced it back to the line taking fluid from the power steering pump to the box.

No, that line looks a bit suspicious as it does not have the OEM 'O' rings and metal pipe ends - it's just some kind of re-inforced felixible pipe with jubilee clips holding it on at either end.

So much for paying top dollar to a so-called independent land rover 'specialist' to assemble your dream truck :(

Anyway, it looks reasonably obvious that this incorrect line is allowing ATF to leak out (the resevoir is down a little) and possible is also allowing air in.

Am I on the right rack? If so, any tips on getting the line replaced and the system re-primed and bled? It's tight as a very tight thing in there, btw. No where near as much room as on the NAD 90.

Also - would a small amount of air in the system create the problems I describe?

Many thanks, David

My Power steering leaks like a sieve, and it never gives me "wobble"

When it was real bad, it would get hard to steer, with the belt squealing. but no wobble.

How are your swivel ball pins? or your ball joints? Also check to be sure your drop arm on the steering box isn't loose! Shouldn't happen, but could be catastrophic if it was. ( I found mine lose once!)

The Bigger hose is low pressure and may just have clamps holding it on that you can tighten. The thinner one is HIGH pressure and should have professionally "clamped" on fittings. I get all mine done at green line hose. But they can be funny about doing "automotive" hoses.

Unless its some custom job you should be able to get replacement hoses from land rover/brit-part/etc.

IME, normally the wobble is from loose swivel pins or worn panhard rod bushings.

Also check toe and all the other thinks mentioned in the previous post.
