Timing the 2.5n/a

#1 Post by dan » Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:02 pm

Hi everyone, I finally got my 110 on the road. I went on the maiden voyage yesterday through some snow, and today up a logging road just to test the 110 out.
All seems well enough, but I feel that there is something up with timing. At least I think so. The issue is that it exhausts black smoke upon slight acceleration. Here in the Kootenays it's quite hilly so I would expect some black smoke once in a while when " givin 'er" , but even on flatter sections I could barely if at all get any acceleration in fifth. As I depressed the accelerator pedal black smoke( unburned diesel?).
The timing belt was changed recently and the follow who did it with me played with the timing a bit afterward. I'm sure we did the belt correctly. I remember him adjusting the timing and if memory serves me right, he advanced it a bit. Could the timing be too advanced?
Thanks.

Is your air cleaner clean? Seems to me I remember someone getting an award at one of our rallies for a dirty air filter. No one would have known if it wasn't for the black smoke when going up hill.

Black smoke is normal.... If the timing is ok and the injectors are OK, you would need to reduce fueling, but that reduces power. They have no altitude compensation, so if you are at altitude, it will smoke.

If timing is too advanced, it will "ping" more than it should. You need to know what to listen for. It will also not want to rev up to the limiter easily. If it is too far retarded, you will get white smoke on overrun.

There are timing pins to set the timing. You can use drill bits. Read the manual. Workshop manuals are available online here: http://www.greendefender.com/index.php? ... &Itemid=51

Thanks for the tips. I did check the air filter and it was dirty. A little oily too. Is that bad? Thanks, Dan.

What style of PCV system do you have? Maybe a picture. There is a really good one that normally is seen on the ex-MOD trucks.
