I have a chev alternator on mine. It is the single wire self-exciting variety. (sounds bad, doesn't it?) The shop that did it suggested that a flat bracket is strongest so they suggested a dual pulley alternator. This fit well with a pretty generic bracket from an auto wrecker bolted to the top of the waterpump and the belt going over the outer pulley of the alternator, in a very straight path.
Is your belt mis-aligned, causing stress to the waterpump pulley, which in turn would stress the shaft, seal and bearings?
