1999 discovery good or bad

looking at a 1999 disco. anything in particular i should be looking at?

is there much difference between this and the earlier models?

is there common issues with this model year?

did this year come with the center diff lock?

1999 is when Series Two Discovery was introduced about half way through the model year. So you have both 1999 Series One and Series Two Discovery’s.

Only Series One Discovery is equipped with Center Diff Lock. Series Two Discovery didn’t get Center Diff Lock until the 2004 model year. :roll:

You can retrofit Center Diff Lock to all Series Two Discovery’s but 1999 – 2001 are by far the easiest to add Center Diff Lock....ask Dave B.

Not all 2001 models had the prevision for the CLD as Land Rover changed the transfer case half way through the year. It can be determined by the serial number.

The Disco 1 and 2 trucks have a lot of differences and both have advantages and disadvantages. The Disco 1 is a simpler truck with less electronics but the Disco 2 gives you a lot of small design improvements.

Were you looking at, a Disco 1 or 2?

That one is a Discovery 1. Some have said the last year or two of the Disco 1 is the best of the breed. My personal preference is for the Discovery 2, which is what I have. Either are great trucks in my opinion, and will serve you well if they are maintained, so you'll save yourself a lot of grief by finding one that's been well maintained by the previous owner as well.

I have a 2001 D2 and I really like it (wife likes it too which is a bonus in my mind) I find that it is a great "all around" vehicle for me. Their troubles are similar to the RRCs, leaky head gaskets, some inner body rust troubles, electrical gremlins, thirsty V8s, the "usual" rover stuff. Both Discos and RRCs are the deals to be had out there and generally seem to be far less expensive to buy than series or defender models considering what you get for the money. $3200 seems a little steep for a D1 that needs work but if overall it is in good shape you can put together a very capable driver for not a lot of money. I wouldn't hesitate in getting another Disco after the great experience I have had with my current ride.

this one has a gremlin that is draining the battery over a week but they have zeroed it down to what fuse is causing it, the fuse for the tail lights. i am sure i can do a better job of sorting it out.
It also has the power seats so i am not sure about that, i may opt for a very early one with as much manual equipment as possible.

they are negotiable on their price so i will see what happens. i am keeping an eye out for ones in vancouver also there seems to be a few that come up as good deals from time to time on craigslist.

i am very familiar with RRC's. I just was not sure on the discos and when the changeovers happened. i saw an early one with a 5 speed tranny about a week ago for around 4000 but it disappeared fast.

this one will be for the wife so it has to look a bit pretty, i can fix mechanical and swap an engine if i get a really good deal but at this time i dont want to waste time on any body work or trying to make it look nice.

if it was up to me i would get another RRC LWB but we have had 5 range rovers already and she has always wanted a disco.

the cheaper the better for the moment, but the cheaper i go the more time i have to spend fixing it i suppose.
