perkins motor in series
iam building a 2a and was thinking of putting a diesel in it, at first i wanted to keep it all landrover 2.25 , 2.5 or 200 , now iam thinking perkins might be a better choice $$$$, does anyone here have a series with a perkins in it ? is it a 4203 or ??? any info on conversion , mileage , noise etc etc would be greatly appreciated , the 2.25 petrol isnt all that bad , but a little more power and better fuel milage would be nice, i have to buy a motor regardless for this project , its an 88 with 4.70s and no overdrive yet ... thanks troy

From what i remember, the Perkins has a lower max rpm and will limit max road speed with series running gear... it has a lot more torque and you could find a set of 3.5 disco diffs that might make it more street able...

I have a Perkins 4.182 in my 109 SII Carawagon and love it. So far it has been bullet proof and dead reliable, but I would have concerns with parts availability if you were to find one. I can only find parts overseas at M&D engineering in the UK but they have been very good to deal with. The governed RPM of the 4.182 is around 3600, and I have never run it up to it. A Roverdrive is definitely recommended. The more common conversion is the 4203 but I have been informed as well that it is a real low rpm dog and brutally noisy. The 4.182 isn't bad for noise. Pretty average for most 4 cyl diesels, from my experience.
