Which LR diesels fit directly into SIII?

#1 Post by davran » Mon Dec 27, 2010 8:28 pm

All,

Other than the 2.25, which of the LR diesels fit directly into a SIII? Will a 2.5 non-turbo bolt in without mods? What about a 2.5 turbo?

Thanks,

I think that you answered your own question - 2.25.

But I'd rather have a 2.5 five-bearing if possible. Since they were the diesel on late Series models, I assume they bolt in but I don't know.

The 2.5 NA diesel is an easy fit but not a bolt in. The right side engine mount on the chassis needs to be cut off and moved to the rear a few inches. The rear most inner leg for the battery tray needs to be lopped off. You'll need to modify the mechanical throttle linkage or switch to cable. And the viscous fan sits too far forward on the 2.5 so you will need to modify the old fan to fit.

I think that takes care of most of it. Small stuff like the fuel return line and diesel fuel filter are easy enough. I stuffed a 2.5 NA into my Series 3 88 back in Aug. Couple days work and it was back on the road. Great little engine for an 88.

The mods to the intake manifold are not really necessary but certainly make things a bit neater.

If you want to go this route and have any specific questions, just let me know.

Thanks, I love when someone else has successfully done what I want to do :)
