There is an aluminum information tag screwed to the bulkhead. Mine is on the passenger side in what I would refer to as the storage shelf. Earlier series 2A and 2's had this plate on the flat space infront of the gear shifter. It has the seriel number stamped on it and should be in clear sight. Your's must be missing if you are asking this question. Although I have never seen one, there is supposed to be a seriel number stamped on the frame by the right front spring hanger, I know that on a series 3 it is supposed to be stamped here but I'm not sure if it was before the series 3 was introduced.

It is generally on the outside of the spring hanger front right, about 1 inch down from where the hanger is welded to the frame rails.
Yes the galvanizing could have covered it, but I saw on CSI that they have a radioscopic way of seeing through galvanized or ground off steel to see the numbers underneath... maybe give Grissom a call!
