Paint Scheme Question

Hello:
Have a 1984 108" WB with the body extending 12" beyond the rear most cross member. Bought the Rover in New Zealand and am now prepping it for paint. As I've worked down through the layers of paint, have discovered three 5" stripes running along the sides of the Landy...from top to bottom...blue, orange and brown. Any idea what the car was used for??

Are you sure it's a 108 not a 109?

Stripes painted or decals? Series or Defender?

How about a pic?

Must have transposed a number...it is a 1984 Series lll 109" WB extended body. The three stripes were painted on. Posting pictures so far has defeated me but I'll try again. Picture is how I received the car from Auckland...............stripes are under the white paint.

Police Land rover?

I remember from my time in NZ that the Police Defenders still have Orange and Blue stripes down the side...not sure about the Brown though?

The stripes means that we should really talk about the Bentley in the picture and the possible trade for another LHD land rover or two.

Love it! I have been looking for an old Bentley to use in Vintage Rallies if you come across one. :roll:

It is a 1953 Bentley R Type, Bentley's second postwar model. There were some 2000 made. They are still available as I see them advertised periodically. What you see is the result of four years of restoration. Always be leary of any motorcar with LHD!!

Am prepping the Rover for paint.....returning it to a NATO green body & limestone roof and wheels. This is my first Land Rover and I can tell you the tractors on my farm ride better than the Rover!! Will try & post pictures when I'm finished painting...........

Looking at your picture you seem to be missing the galvanized capping from the second door back including the tub?

Is it the same on the other side?

As far as the ride goes, check your springs...oil them up as they do tend to "harden" :lol: up with not much use.

You can always go with parabolic springs, which I'm told give a less jarring ride.

There are no door cappings on both middle doors......don't know why.
According to the "Carjam" (corresponds to our Carfax, I think) the car was first registered in New Zealand in 1984 and was a "CKD"....apparently means the pieces were put together in NZ. Carjam notes the Landy was first registered as a "private passenger vehicle", which makes the stripes more puzzling.
Note that the front doors have the standard Landy handle, while the middle & rear doors have a "dish" door pocket and chrome handle....missing in the pic as it broke off. Have pics of the handles which I will try & post.
Am retired from the U S Army so am used to a harsh ride!!
I also set up monthly activities for the Northwest Region of the Rolls-Royce Owners Club (rroc.org) and often have contact with your Canadian countrymen up there in BC...............

CKD = Knock down Kit.

This was quite a common land rover practice in AUS and NZ as more than likely it was cheaper to send it disassembled....could also have something to do with "made in..."

I find the lack of capping particularly curious as these tend to add structure and rigidity to the rear box :? Interesting handles as well. I do know that in some of the CKD vehicles I have seen some unusual mods.

I'm not sure of this and can't quote dates or sources but IIRC, some later years had no decorative steel strip in the second row door. I didn't say galvanized because they haven't been for quite a few years now. The doors for the second row could easily be later replacements.
