Can power points -- lighter sockets -- be made always live?

#1 Post by davran » Sat May 14, 2011 10:59 am

All,

The power points in the D2 turn off when the key is off. Is there a way to keep them live all the time? I'd like to be able to charge cell phones, etc. when the key's off.

Thanks,

Yes, by cutting their existing feed wire which is ignition fed, and locating a feed that is always on. Always keeping in mind precautions about tying back and insulating live wires properly, putting identifiers on unused wires, etc. I would be inclined to leave the two stock plugins the way they are, as sometimes its to your advantage to have the accessory turn off at the same time as the truck, (like when you try and start it in the morning) and purchase instead some of the accessory plugs that canuck tire sells and wire a couple of these in in addition to the stock plugs.

I replaced my 12 volt cigarette lighter with a USB charger. Got the setup from canada tire but it works great and is always on.

Edit: sorry mines a defender.

Permanent feed on 12v outlet

#4 Post by ANDYD » Mon May 16, 2011 12:24 pm

Hi,

On my Range Rover I did as Dave suggests above and put a permanent feed onto my forward 12v outlet. (left the rear one on the ignition)
Keep in mind when/if you do this to pick a feed with the same ampage as your existing 12v outlet was (its easy to find a permanent live wire but it may only be a 5amp fuse on the circuit).

Cheers, Andy
