6.2 detroit diesel into D2?

All,

I've been reading about some successful conversions of 6.2 detroit diesels into Discos. Anyone have any experience concerning this? Certainly would be more parts available in NA.

That is a GM 6.2 diesel, not a Detroit Diesel. It has been done quite a bit.

Why ????

The cost would out way the fuel savings.
Bad engine, lots of cooling problems & no power.

Detroit Diesel designed or at least assisted in the design of the 6.2 gm diesel.

I'm not sure of this. I've thought about it a few times. When I had a GMC 3/4 Ton pickup with the 6.5TD, I regularly got about 23 MPG (imperial) out of it, and it was certainly about a ton heavier than my D2, so I would hope I could get about 25 MPG in the D2.

The TDI and 2.8 TGV options, however will pull the mileage over 30. However, for an estimated 5 MPG less, you're getting easy access to parts, and likely some cash savings as nothing has to be shipped from the UK – and you're getting more power in normal driving conditions, even on models without a turbo.

The 6.2NA, 6.5NA and 6.5TD are all very similar, and while they did get a bad reputation, I think some of it was misplaced. On my truck, I can tell you the engine itself was faultless, but the fuel injection (1995, some of the first electronic units) sucked big time and cost a lot of money.

If I were doing it, I'd look for a 1993-98 6.5TD, and put a 1993 mechanical pump on it, thus the pump is set up for the turbo, but has no electronics.

I've thought about this conversion a number of times for my D2, but been discouraged as there is no "kit" developed and therefore I'm on my own to figure out how to make all the computers happy and cooperative with the new engine, while with the 2.8TGV there is a kit with full step by step on how to tweak all the computers to actually get all the lights out on the dash. I understand that a number of the D2 computer systems have dependencies on the engine system to operate properly, so the engine computer has to be tricked into thinking all is well under the bonnet so it doesn't go into limp mode and turn the dash lights on.

Just my thoughts.

I helped a friend fit a 6.5na into a 110. He gets around 25 US mpg out of it with boat loads of torque. I've owned two trucks with these engines, an 83 suburban with a 6.2na that used tow an series II 88 faster and with less fuel burned than the 88 could do under it's own power. The body of that suburban rusted away at over 520000km but the engine still ran and is in my garage. The other one is a 6.5TD suburban that I just bought last week. I love these engines. The old 6.2 (160hp and 295lbs) in my sub averaged over 20 US mpg even at 500000km. The new 6.5TD (190hp and 395lbs) sub is only doing 18 US mpg so far but it is the 3/4 ton K2500 4x4 heavy duty version with 4.11 ring and pin gears, 8600lb GVW and rated to tow 10000lbs. I think I know how I'll be towing rovers over the mountains again. I friend of mine has the lighter duty version of the 6.5TD sub and gets over 20 US mpg with it and it has over 500000km on it now.
