Turbo Diesel 19j injector pump question

I have been chasing an intermittent run-away problem on my 19J turbo diesel defender engine for awhile and tonight I think I have narrowed it down to a case of a damaged diaphragm in the injector pump. What I have found is that the vacuum line that runs between the turbo and the injection pump is getting diesel fuel in it which, from what I understand, is resulting in the turbo sucking-up fuel and causing the engine to run away from time to time unexpectedly.

The cause of the problem I am told is that the diaphragm in the injection pump has split which is allowing fuel to get past it and into the hose leading to the turbo. It was too dark tonight to get a good look at the pump but it appears that the hose and diaphragm are on the engine block side of the pump (figures). So I am wondering if anyone has experience replacing the diaphragm in a 19J injector pump and is it a DIY project or something left to a shop? Can it be done in situ or does the pump have to come out of the truck?

Except... That is not a vacuum line, but a pressure line from the turbo.

Okay, thanks for clarifying that for me... but I'm still getting fuel in there which is the problem so if you (or someone else) can enlighten me about repairing or replacing the diaphragm in the injection pump that would be appreciated.

Are you sure your turbo is putting out pressure? have you measured the pressure at the manifold? that line should only push into the injector pump. If you take off the diaphram on top of the pump the hose leads into that cavity. Take note of the orientation as it has to go back on the same way.

Hi DJ

Yes, it is getting boost (the turbo has been checked-out with everything looking good). The run away problem only happens when the truck has been idling or running slowly such as sitting at a stop light or shunting around the back yard and occassionally when I go to accelerate it runs away with noise and a big cloud of smoke (much to the chagrin of anyone behind me). The problem doesn't occur when the turbo is boosting (I can run for hours at highway speed without a hiccup). From what I understand the fuel is getting pushed up through the line into the turbo causing the run away.

Thanks for the link but unfortunately that was for the Bosch pump on the TDIs, the 19J uses a CAV pump with the diaphragm fitting on the side.

sorry I thought 19J was referring to the serial number on the early 110 turbo diesel. Good luck with your 'yota.

It is. A 19J is a Land Rover Turbo Diesel.

If you Google "CAV Injection Pump Manual" you will easily find a manual online. Not sure it will help.

No more run-aways... finally!

Well, the turbo boost diaphragm has been replaced and the 130 runs like a whole new truck… the 2.5 turbo is not a 200 or 300 tdi by any means but it is doing not bad for a one ton truck with only 85 horsepower. I’m climbing hills in higher gears than before and keeping up with traffic for a change. Seems to have a lot more power now when the turbo kicks in and no more of the unexpected run-aways and big clouds of smoke at low RPMs!

The old diaphragm was in shreds so it was no wonder fuel and air were mixing in a way that wasn’t part of the original design. In case anyone else is dealing with this problem with a 2.5 diesel turbo there is a great write-up with pics of the repair sequence on the LR4X4 forum http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=33911 As it turns out the seal kit for the CAV pump is a Delphi which is a stock item in some of the local diesel pump shops.
