#1 Post by dan » Thu Jan 12, 2012 4:42 pm

Hi there, how can I tell if my head gasket is 2 hole or 3 hole.As well they mention id? what are these numbers and can I figure them out by the engine's serial number? Any added info is appreciated.

if you look at the perimeter of the head gasket - that portion of the gasket that is visible while the head is still in place - there will be portion or tab with one ., two , or three holes. I understand though its is a rarity that there is also a four hole gasket .

It is the indicator of the thickness of the gasket .

You might have to remove the head to see how many holes you have. Also it is possible that the one you have is not the right one, to be sure you should measure the piston protrusion height.

quote from Gelncoyne 4x4 website-Head gasket set to fit 200TDi engine, codes 11L, 12L, 13L. Includes Elring (OEM quality) head gasket, pattern manifold gasket, rocker cover gasket, thermostat housing gasket, exhaust downpipe gaskets, valve stem oil seals, injector washers etc.

Your engine may have any of three different thicknesses of head gasket. If you look at the head to block join below No 3 injector you will see a tab sticking out with one, two or three holes in it. It is vitally important that you do not fit a thinner gasket than the one currently fitted. If you are unable to ascertain the type of gasket fitted, replace it with a three-hole type.

As Andrew states, you need to measure the piston protrusion to properly chose the correct head gasket regardless of what is in there.

It also is a good time to make sure none of the con rods are bent.

The workshop manual containing the overhaul information is here: http://defender-manuals.s3.amazonaws.co ... lement.pdf

Page 77 addresses this question. Normally whatever is in there now should be correct, but you should never trust whoever worked on it last....

...and, there was mention of elring OEM gasket above — in my experience you should go out of your way to find an elring gasket. The aftermarket ones just don't last.

Just my two cents worth.
