disable abs/tc/hill descent on D2?

#1 Post by davran » Sun Jan 29, 2012 6:20 pm

Is it possible to fully disable the abs/traction control/hill descent on a D2? Mine is working fine so far, but I'm deciding what to do when the system failed.

Why would you want to disable safety features (ABS esp.), is it not better to fix the issue at the time.... I'm sure ICBC would take a dim view if you were in an accident & it was found that standard safety functions were disabled to save on repair costs.... just my 0.2c

Fair enough.

We disable the system for the sake of photography. Big rooster tails of sand, drifting on gravel, etc.

You take the ABS sensors out of the wheels.

But, only do it with a professional driver on a controlled track.

Thanks Ray. I would of course only ever do this on a closed course...

Disabling TC/HD

#6 Post by Rob » Wed Feb 01, 2012 10:36 pm

Hi Dave

This topic has been discussed alot on the land rover forum. http://landroverforums.com/forum/discov ... rol-14267/

I am considering retro-fitting the CDL hardware into my D2 then installing the by-pass switch so I can induce a little spin when it might be helpful.... sometimes the TC is counter productive as it slows the motor on occassions when you might want some revs and bit of tire spin to clear the treads. I'm sure there's lots of debate on either side of the topic but personally I like the performance of the HD/TC/ABS on my D2 in most circumstances.

Cheers, Rob

D2 with full ABS/TC/HDC intact. 348,000 KM, very few problems – basically two wheel sensors have failed in that time. I put a CDL in, and clipped the wire as per Ashcroft site.

This is a pedal to the metal hill climb, much of the time around 6000 RPM, thus HDC wasn't in use, but the TC was constantly doing its job. Turn up the volume...

I wouldn't recommend you disconnect or disable it. It does the job well, and it's built to last!

Cool video Dave, thanks for posting!

I am presuming that was a time trial section (or you really had to pee bad) :clock:

There are rare times when it can cause problems. I've seen it on snow off road, where the traction control prevents the vehicle from getting up something by taking away too much power. Normally it is very helpful. It would be nice to turn it off if needed, IMO.

I've also see ABS cause problems on very slippery surfaces.

Thanks for all the info, Gentlemen.

I have read that if you install the center diff lock cable in a D2 -- mine has the mechanism in the transfer case but not the cable -- and don't clip the wire, it disengages the TC whenever CDL is selected. I'll try to find the article.

Only if you turn the truck on while it is engaged. If you engage it while running TC stays on. Understanding all of that, you should be able to add a switch to let you turn it off, but it would require stopping and turning the truck off and on. Really you only want to interrupt the circuit where it goes to the ECU, so that you do not lose the dash light (if that is possible).

All that said, if you do not have a center diff lock actuator installed, that needs to be your number one first priority.....

Scroll down to step 20 for details of clipping the wire.

Does anyone have experience with Great Basin Rovers' CDL kit? It looks easier to install:
