Loud ticking and no oil pressure

#1 Post by girth » Fri Mar 23, 2012 6:31 pm

My 97 land rover discovery started a loud ticking noise the other day and the oil light came on. I took it into a mechanic and it has no oil pressure and he says it gets expensive looking into these things. Anyone know anything about this?

Disco Ticking ...........

In my experience, ticking is normally one of four things;
- Exhaust manifold leak
- Noisey worn or out of adjustment tappets
- Slipped cylinder lining
- Head gasket leaking.

If you are fairly good around engines you can rule out the first two quite easily. The second two are more involved and will cost you a bit more ......

No oil pressure is serious, don't drive it. Could be oil pump failure, did your mechanic actually confirm the loss of oil pressure or was he going on the oil light?

My problem is I am not mechanically inclines...LOL... so with that being said this truck with a good motor is worth 3000.00 and my mechanic stated that to tear it apart would ad up fast so he suggested that I may want to call her quits with this. What do you guys think? Keep in mind that I was driving it for about 5 mins to make it home after this loud ticking noise started to happen. Yes it has no oil pressure as he checked that.

My opinion is that once the oil light came on it should have been shut down immediately and the problem diagnosed. It is impossible to diagnose over the internet the fault or the damage done by driving it. In fact, it is impossible to diagnose the damage done from driving it with no oil pressure without at least dropping the pan. With minimal effort it may be possible to achieve oil pressure again (new oil pump if that was the failure) but how long you can go after that would be just a guess. Maybe quite a while, who knows. All you can really do is take it to a mechanic that you trust and get his opinion and a quote and go from there.

Good luck,

Yes i agree and i have taken it to a mechanic who i trust and he feels its a bigger issue. Too bad as I really liked that truck! Now i need to sell it to someone in the Vancouver/lower mainland area...anyone know anybody that would want to buy this off me? I can post a picture for those that are interested? [/img]

So if it's worth $3000 with a good motor, how much are you going to ask for it?

Not sure at this point as I will need to look into it.
